I am reading Pride and Prejudice (to understand Twilight), and it shows what is a lady pretty much; dignified, cultured, pretty; and what she wants a tall, handsome, cultured, old wealth man. Being a lady is made, not born.

I now see Gone with the Wind in a better perspective, because they had a lady/gentlemen society but when the South was defeated that whole society was destroyed and only those who conform survive. Now I see why Scarlet obsess over Ashley because he represent her childhood image of  a man.

And I see myself in this lady steriotype, more so Scarlet because I never had the chance to live as a woman... like her working in the fields and doing a mans job because she was force into it (by the war).

I wanted to know....

Are you a lady or just a woman?

Nah, I'm one of the lads.

Call me a Anarchist but I prefer secret option C, the Lady who is tired of old money and keeps her pride and her looks, but doesn't need  a man, or want one. Remember,  more money= more ego=harder to train. So...uh Feminist? But if you make me pick black or white, I choose Lady.

Look at Hollywood's modern women who have a more free style than historic role models. They may not often play really girly-girl parts, but they show their femininity and dress so incredibly well when attending events.

Of course, I'm lesbian and fancy a certain type of girl.    Oh ... to be young again.

Mia Kirshner
Charlize Theron
Kate Winslet
Adèle Exarchopoulos (Only because I loved her in Blue Is The Warmest Color.)

This may be my favorite post ever. Considering my chronological age I still feel I am so early in this journey that I am a girl yet. I think there is a certain self realization, maybe acceptance and experience that makes a woman(whether Lady or not). I have teen daughters that are further along than I am(although I do walk in heels better). I suspect my goal is to be a woman. If I become a lady, I think it will be by accident or mistaken by age .

ok so lets talk about the word Lady because originally it was a female variant of Lord or Gentleman and back in feudal times they were the nobility so lady was a way to address a high status woman
so thats where the stereotypes of being ladylike come from which mostly focus on purity and are super outdated and messed up.
if a woman wants to be Ladylike then she can (e.g. me) but in no way should these standards b applied to EVERYONE or seen as virtuous because theyr e relative

eh, I'm a woman. I am kind, gentle, respectful and pleasant when treated the same - but I also have a very warped, black, naughty sense of humour, will speak my mind, I get furious about cruelty and injustice... and I can be an utterly spiteful biatch if someone wrongs me. So yeah... I'm a woman.

Reading Pride and Prejudice, I do declare, is rather liken to cold porridge... after struggling to read it, you then get a sudden ephiphany and read with much ease. Its an ill book if you're not patient like a nun in deep reflection.

Janes best friend gave good advice... marry fast then find out about him.

Hmm.... theres a point and time when being a lady is all about marriage, but Scarlet OHara used men to survive and then open her own business up (very unwomanly like).

Yep...yep... this is what I do on my Saturday night, interpreting decades old books about women in old societies like its relevant.

The word lady, oh my.
Growing up, and even today if I used that word in front of mum she'll say: "A lady is a mans means of what a woman should be".

From a man's point of view, I don't think being called a lady is a put down. In my book, a lady is a woman with ethics, a mix of gentle and strong, stands up for her beliefs and treats others with respect.

I'm sure it means other things to some. Being a lady is a state of mind, not a function of how much money you have or how fashionable you are. There are women, some are ladies, some are not. There are men. Some are gentlemen, some are not. I guess it depends on your definition of "lady".

I prefer to be a bitch Treat others the way they treat me, return favours with kindness, and respond to insults with a slap (cause punching could inflict too much damage). Never be a doormat, speak up for others, protect the weak and be kind, generous, strong, fearless and confident.
Oh, and change my opinions whenever I feel I like to.

I can be lady if it suits me or if the occasion calls for it - sweet, demure, charming, and a little bit submissive.

Or I can be an independent woman with a mind of her own if I so choose, making my own decisions and not taking crap from anybody.

I can cook and clean and make a comfy nest for someone. I can fix the car if need be.

All of this is my choice - I can be whoever I want to or need to be. I am a woman.

YES.

That's how I roll too. I expect respect from people, and have no time for feeling like a victim.
