Good for you! I know the process can be scary but it is soooooo worth it. I think this change will give you more satisfaction than anything else in the process. That was my experience.
I was so frightened when I did mine, I had my lawyer appear on my behalf. I don't know if that is still possible. I was scared to death when I had to go get my driver license changed and had to keep that "M" on it. Utah didn't have any sense of transness back then. When I moved to California, the DMV changed my gender to F just based on my appearance. I did my SS change in California where it was no big deal.
I couldn't get a modified birth certificate until 2007 from Utah because of the laws. But, they changed them and I got right to it. So now I have a certificate of live birth that has a different last name than that of my parents. When I applied for a passport recently, I was asked why my last name was different. I just told the kind woman that it was "classified." She accepted that reason unreservedly as though I were in a witness protection program or something. Go figure.
