We all know the norms and I will not go into that.
What bugs me is this:

Gender Roles At Work.
For example a female working
on your care might get a few snide
remarks directed towards her.

Basically the fact that I work
on charter as a captain. I was formally
female I identify as male and have been for
many many years. Here is the thing.

When people board the large boat and if my boss is at the controls (My boss is a woman)
they say something like "Oh wow we have a woman as a captain, I hope we don't
sink." And If I'm at the controls,  I often hear "Oh great it's a lesbian at the wheel! Dear god hope we don't crash."
What the above comments show is that, men don't think woman can the job of a captain.
it's sad as if you fact check this... *Women have better vision then men. *
Men and woman are equal in their brain power, meaning that they can do things
if they are trained in it correctly like:
Drive a large boat,Fix your car, Protect you, woman can handle complicated
situations. I mean I know I'm male but this dis-respectfulness,
directed at women is an attack! I mean I think the real thing is that Men,
feel then women are less then men or they say that women are stupid or something.

This is so wrong I mean I don't mind if the person working on my
truck is a gal, I mean if she knows what she is doing and the business
backs her up, then I have no problem.  I think it's nice to see woman getting
into those BIG roles! I mean like CEO and Chairman and I notice
women do not show that EGO perv-ado crap that a good number of men show.
It just makes me so mad to see how men think women should be at work and play.
and yet if the woman decides to tell the man how to do stuff, that's like treason.

I asked another male captain why people seem to flip
when and if they get a sight of a woman on the bridge.
He said this:
"Most people just don't think that a woman
can or would be able to drive more then their car.
See it's not just a male dominated occupation that's
the problem, it's the fact that people don't understand
that it's not gender that chooses ones job but the mind
and the heart. "

What he said opened my eyes,
I makes since I choose my job based
on what I want and that I did not anything
else get in my way.

Anyone Agree or Disagree?

Frak the Patriarchy! ;)

At least it isn't like Ye Olde Tymes, where women weren't allowed on ships, or allowed to compete in sport, or allowed outside to cavort with menfolk, or allowed autonomy from their spouse... What I'm saying is: a lot of men are idiots and they can still do their jobs when they're obviously impaired. The podcast Stuff Mom Never Told You has taught me so much of this double standard in the hetero-cis-normative world. Add an LGBT or racial aspect to it and it gets even worse.

To your question, I found my field by luck and pressure from my family. Soooo I agree. I chose a male dominated (STEAM) field because I love the work, and I had a love/hate relationship with programming before going back to school.

I remember back then it was like in those places
where women must be covered. I remember for class
back in high school I did a report on the battle for the
woman's right to vote! I just still feel like woman can do
anything and I mean anything a man can do and men
should note this. I mean shesh we put a WOMAN on the moon!!
Anyone remember her?

I've seen it both ways... ... and then there's the people - male or female - who really suck at their jobs and everyone knows it, but they've been there so long nobody's allowed to give them the news up straight.

Yeah, I think the heart and mind chooses the career. And sorts the truly passionate and driven from the chaff. It doesn't matter what gender a person is, if they are truly, 100% committed to something, they will probably succeed. You just keep plugging away and away until you are the best at what you do, and then who can argue with that?

Been there, done that. Before I came out and started to transition I was a female cop. I had to work twice as hard to get half the respect that the guys got by default.

I work in the private sector now and I freelance. It's much more egalitarian, no sexist comments whatsoever in the almost 3 years that I've been at it (including transitioning on the job). I think it largely depends on role and industry. People seem to love stereotypes and its tough to avoid them in a lot of jobs.

And people say we don't need feminism any more!  :D

Did you know that your uterus will fly out of your body if you travel more than 50 miles per hour?  Yup, sexism is a very bizarre beast...  Maybe more of us should become stand-up comedians, because there's some serious comedy-gold in the crazy musings of sexism, we would make a fortune!  :D

Yes, there are some very tired ideas about our abilities when it comes to gender and those traditional roles.  Living near the mouth of the Columbia River we have bar pilots, huge commercial vessel captains and yes charter boat captains that are female.  We also have the premier Coast Guard small vessel training center where one of my best friends, a transgender woman, was an instructor.

I am also a sailor and captain my own 31 foot pilot house MSV.  The last time I was boarded the Coasties were cool with Captain Tessa and I am glad they are around these treacherous seas.   We obviously do have a long way to go for equality, equity and a culture that respects our ability is not about anatomy.
