Heyas im booking for the first time a therapy session with a psychiatrist. I found her online and shes fluent with gender identity issues.

Shes very friendly and willing to adapt to my limited benefit plan, she also says it takes about a year to begin hrt due to a backlog of some sort.

What should i exoect or look for in my first session?

Hi Shandril-

Going to therapy for the first time can be scary, but remember that the therapist is there to help you and anything you say she's probably heard before. She is a medical professional and she is required to keep the conversation between you and her private.

With that said your first session will be more of a meet and greet than anything else. You'll be able to ask her questions about how the process works, and she'll want to find out more about you. One of the first questions she will ask you is probably some variation of "why are you here"?

A therapist's job is not to tell you who/what you are - their job is to guide you and help you think through your current situation. They can also provide valuable advice and valuable insights into your situation and can explain how to adapt and think about how you feel. And they can write HRT prescriptions if they are a psychiatrist.

You'll be shocked at how fast the time passes; it's over with before you know it.

It feels good to offload what's been bothering you - be honest and open with her; she can't help you if you are not open and honest.

Thanks, i pre warned her that shell be more than welcome to interrupt me as im sure you all know bottling it all up for decades makes for a long talk lol

She seems really excited to help me my first impression is that im either her first gid patient or she hasnt had many.

With the world beginning to accept us more every day i think it makes sense financially for them to branch out and hopefully there will be an increase in doctors as well since she told me the process takes about a year due to waiting lists.

Than you both so much for your input of the first session. I have my first session on DEC 9th. I have kaiser im told its not that hard to get on to HRT but i guess ill find out. I'm also type 1 diabetic so I already have a endocrinologist and I had my talk with her about starting HRT she is the one that set up the appointment to see therapist for me. my endo also has my profile already set up to the medication but she just needs the go ahead from the therapist. I had to wait 2 months to get an appointment. I really hope that it goes well.

So I had my therapy session yesterday.  It was great. She had a questions for me.  She had me explain why I thought I need hormones.  It was about a 45min session.  And I was approved.  She said I only need to do more therapy when I'm ready to do bottom surgery. I have kiaser so look into what you have and see reviews on trans patients

I have my first appointment coming up next Wednesday, Dec. 16.  We won't have to do a get to know you chat since we've been friends since late 1999.  I've seen her twice in the last three weeks so she knows some things are piling up on me.  But we've got to wait to get in her office where friendship ends and Therapist/Client takes over.
