Hi folks!
well, I think I am finally finding my voice! whenever I hear a MTF lamenting about their singing voice I remind them that Nico had a low voice... I finally tried to do one of her songs and was really happy with it, so I recorded it! unfortunately I have a pretty old camera and really primitive video editing capabilities, but I think I pulled it off!

so here it is! All Tomorrows Parties arrangement, voice, and all instruments by me!
hope you like it!

My current project is TRANSmission and it's finally starting to take shape :D
if you are interested in hearing more, there is a link to my Candi Facebook page in the video description on youtube.

keep on rockin'!

Hi Candi,

Great cover!!! Your guitar work is excellent, I enjoyed the tone of your voice more than Nico's, and the coda you added was perfect. An extended coda, after a repetitive AB form, can be so potent.

My one suggestion is, I think if you blended in more head voice, the end of your lines wouldn't seem flat. You may be entirely on pitch, but I know when I was finding my tone, I focused too much on my chest voice, and therefore was sometimes be a bit flat, and if reached too much at the leaps, I would have a glottal stop.

Also, as I was listening to the eternal droning guitar and hearing about, "Tomorrow's parties," and "Silks and linens of yesterday's gowns," I conjectured the song is about our connection to the stream of human existence. When I heard lyrics such as, "For whom none will go mourning," and "She'll turn once to Sunday's clown and cry behind the door," I realized that the song has a deep hidden pain, and is much more nihilistic than conveyed by the music. I enjoy the internal conflict this creates, but it would interesting to see the direction this song would take, if a performer contrasted some moments by employing less stoicism.

Anyway, great work, and keep it up! Also, you look hot.  :)

Thank you Autumn! your post really made my day :D funny how a few words can really make you feel wonderful!

thanks for your suggestion, I agree totally, I'm only just starting to find my voice, and it still needs a lot of work. I've been working every morning for about an hour on my talking voice, trying to get it more feminine sounding with little success, and singing as loud and long as I can for most of the day. The singing is helping, and I think I may be getting a bit better at my talking voice, luckily I'm not after anything too high, I find Lauren Bacall's voice the bee's knees of female speaking voices, and I rather like Nico's singing voice, so I don't have too far to go :D

I've been trying some of the tricks, more breath, head-voice (you are 110% correct, I am off key in many places in the song above, especially at the end of some of the phrases) I seem to have to belt it out in order to get the voice I'm after, but I lose control when sustaining notes. all in all, I was just super happy to finally not sound like a man. I'm not where I'd like to be yet, but I am working on it :) Since posting this video I hooked up with an art space and played my first solo show. it was nerve wracking, but it felt great to finally get back out there, this time as the real me :) it wasn't my best performance ever, but it was a great first show, and they asked me back, so I'll be doing it again this Friday! :D

Yes, that song, totally nihilistic, a profound sadness (or desperation?) in our poor girl. I'm drawn to stuff like that, much of my original material dwells on it (perhaps too much :P ) but I was always drawn to that 19th century ideal of beauty in darkness and decay (yes, I'm a Baudelaire fan :P ), there is something real about it.

thanks again for your comments, totally made my day! :D
I was having a couple of days of feeling like a monster, this morning as I was putting on my face I thought "hey, I'm not so bad!" and then I read your post and almost cried (good tears) thank you!

After you get Lauren Bacall's voice, I would buy a record of you reading the phone book. She is definitely the bee's knees.

I'm glad I could bring you some happiness. Good luck on Friday!  :)
