So many of my brothers and sisters view the experience of living trans as if there is a requirement or imperative that must be adhered to. This is not the case for many of us, though there may be many common threads and activities. We are, by our nature, rugged individuals that have a strong affinity for forging our own paths in life. The fact that we possess courage that frightens others to strong actions towards us is proof that we are not followers, that we are not the ordinary or the mundane.

That we are not followers does not necessarily mean that we are leaders either. We do our own thing, in our own way and in our own time. There is no map, no chart and no boundary except that which we walk, plot or impose from within ourselves. I wrote to a wonderful sister of mine this morning, "I love life unplanned, unscripted and free." This is what it is to be me.

I love each and every one of you. For your uniqueness, for your companionship and for your courage. Trans, Cis or other, you are the spice of life that has my heart glowing when I awaken, knowing that you are greeting the day with me...wherever in the world or at what point on whatever journey you are traveling. Be safe, know that smiles are generated from the inside and are infectious. Love all you touch this day and know that you are good, whole and beautiful.

Dear Kaitylynn,

Your wish is my command.  As instructed, I am choosing to love my day.  In Portland the day is cold, rainy and gray.  But this is a beautiful, charming sort of gray.  The bare trees are rinsed clean and prepared for the first hint of springtime awakening.  And, yes, we are at the halfway point between winter solstice and spring equinox.  Let the awakening begin!

I appreciate hearing that you love me!  I love you too!  Regardless of what skeptics and naysayers would have us believe, you are correct.  We trans women and trans men of the first quarter of this 21st century are pioneers and go-getters.  We are forging trails and building roads where none existed before us.  The courage in your heart, and in mine, and in every trans person who speaks his or her truth, in big ways and in little ways, is a healing salve that kisses and makes better the wounds and bruises that future trans girls and boys will boldly face with the certainty that they are not alone.  You did that!
