Why is is we humans are constantly trying to explain ourselves to others?
We all know who we are, deep inside. Who is anyone to question your existence?

and yet I keep feeling this need to have a complete, university peer reviewed scientific 'explanation' of my gender to people. a lifetime of people questioning me, doubting me, on everything, not just gender, everything really.

sometimes I don't have any idea who I am.
That's scary.

In order to feel valued.

I think everyone wants love and understanding, or at least tolerance, possibly even acceptance.

But I know for me, there are some things can't explain because I don't really know/understand them myself. Or how to start.

People are hard.

Probably because as a species humans have thrived by identifying themselves and banding together based on certain criteria/identities.

Unfortunately, the flip side is that people tend to flip out when they can't adequately categorize a person according to the rules they've learned.

You don't really have to explain yourself to anybody - except of course when it might endanger your life not to. Tolerance for what is "different" and not having to explain why you are might well be a very modern thing.

I've always wanted to be understood, and to have my viewpoint respected if not shared. I don't think I would have focused on it nearly as much if I hadn't met so much resistance to being organically me growing up. Because we're marginalized we want to be understood and accepted.
