Turns out, it's the national Republican Party pushing for trans discrimination

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2016/03/25/turns-out-its-the-national-republican-party-pushing-for-trans-discrimination/

Pink News/By Bobby Rae   03/25/2016

"A resolution passed by the Republican National Committee (RNC) has shown the party are coordinating trans discrimination on a national level.

This week, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, signed a new law that blocks local governments from expanding protections for members of the LGBT community. "

I'm not surprised. What a bunch of nice folks. Let's "conserve" our traditional power structures by hurting other people.

Next election cycle perhaps they will add "kicking puppies" to the platform.

What's insulting to a thinking person's intelligence is that they couch this in the terms of religious freedom.

And yet tens of millions of people buy that silly argument.

I'm doing my best to keep calm but it is a rather frightening time here in a the U.S. as the various 'Haters' continue to work at ramping up their ability to discriminate

I can't help think but we're partly to blame. The reason there is such widespread ignorance of how damaging these laws really are is because we haven't made the effort to educate the public about our bathroom needs. We assume a friendly media will do it for us, or that it doesn't matter. Well, it matters in North Carolina, and no one is going to do it for us.

I'd like to see "Support Transgender Bathroom Rights" on every transgender and allied bumper, buttons, t-shirts, anything to get the word out. Instead, we're demurely silent, grousing in private on facebook pages and support forums until something happens like it did in North Carolina.

This is no big surprise. The test case was the HERO bill in Houston last year. They passed a huge bill in NC yesterday. I'm sure we'll see lots of these things on the ballot this fall to bring out the 'conservative' vote.

Republicans are in serious trouble for the next election due to the chaos in the Republican primaries.  So this is a national tactic to rescue the party.  This is very similar to the Republican effort in 2004 to place initiative measures outlawing same-sex marriage on state ballots across the country to maximize the turnout of reactionaries and Bible-thumpers in order to boost the re-election chances of George W. Bush.

Same-sex marriage bans in 2004.  Today, it's us.  Fasten your seatbelts.  It's going to be a bumpy ride.

The problem is bathroom laws are only scratching the surface, I believe it goes much deeper than that

The recipe for "State's Right's bigots" is set now by NC. Hurry and rush something through is a special session before public opinion and the national outcry occurs. South Dakota, Oklahoma etc turned from the bigotry as soon as the consequences became clear

Well that may be about to backfire on the govenor

Educating them about us is not the problem.  These are the same people that deny evolution, geologic science, and the efficacy of vaccinations.

There is no shortage of education and exposure to these thing and yet they don't believe them either.

I served my country for a short while, on the basis that all would be free and all would have the same rights as others.  At 19 years old, I accepted the fact that I would die in Iraq, just to give freedom to the rest of the country.  I had already accepted the fact that I would die to protect the rights of my fellow citizens.  To see what the US is becoming, makes me wish I had died before I saw the real drive of the country.  I am disappointed and ashamed to be called a US citizen. As a whole, the pop. is more concerned about who pees next to them than the real problems we face.  Trans people have been going to the bathroom that they feel they need to go to since we have had separate   restrooms.  Why, now, does everyone want to start complaining, when the rest of the country could use the attention on children that need food, parents that need help, or jobs being lost to other countries?  This is the time that I am ashamed to be called an American, and if you knew how I used to feel about my country, you would know how hard it is for me to say.

Christy, your post is well said, and very moving.  May I share it elsewhere? (Without attribution, of course.)

It's scary to think that this issue has yet to appear before the supreme court, and the republicans may well block Obama's nomination.  If the media clown wins, I am terrified to see what would come of that judicial nomination.

Fortunately, the chance of the Republicans winning the election are very slim.  Whichever of their two top candidates are nominated, both have the highest disapproval ratings among the general population in the history of this country.  If the party rigs the convention and chooses somebody else their base will rebel, and probably riot with great violence.  In short, the Republicans are screwed.

They might not gain the presidency but they will likely keep control of Congress in both houses. We really need to encourage everyone we know to vote to replace these bigots in the down ballot races as well.

We need to use the political  system, My problem is that  it is so mind boggling sad that so many Americans think these hateful people are right.

I peed in a public women's restroom in North Carolina this week, actually more than one. Woo-Hoo—civil disobedience rocks.

A cop will not be placed at the entrance to every public restroom in the state to enforce a law that will surely be overturned by some court once it's challenged. Other than getting bigots to the polls, I think the primary purpose of these laws is to keep teenagers separated by sex assigned at birth. The laws being passed are not fair. They'll make life more difficult for those who could use some acceptance. Sadly, this is just another character-bulding opportunity.
