What do you think is the real number of trans people in the US population? The World?

The current guess is about 1 in 600 to 700 but as people may remain in the closet their entire life, it's only possible to make a rough guess.

Therefore, the intrinsic prevalence of MtF transsexualism here must be on the order of ~1:500 and may be even larger than that. These results appear to be consistent with studies of TS prevalence in recent studies in other countries.


Note this is for transsexual people.
The number of transgender people is much higher.

One in twenty men crossdress, so the number is 5% or higher. Around fifteen million Americans.

Just wondering where you got that number? I know some normal seeming cis men that don't seem feminine outwardly that you would never guess crossdress by looking at them, but they don't intend to change their gender.

Transgender people not necessarily want to change their gender ...
they show gender variant behaviour ...

Impossible to say.  Many with transgender inner life never express openly.  On the other hand, many who transition successfully just fade from view and blend into the cis populace.  TG people are certainly a small subset of LGBT people generally, and there are probably some 30-40 million LGBT folks in the United States.  Perhaps one to two million TG folks here?  I don't think we can know for sure.

I would agree with this. I know the first part rang true for me. Twenty years ago, when I was a teenager in a small town, I knew in my heart that I was a guy but I decided that as long as I could pass as a straight woman, I would take my secret to the grave. I'm sure there are a great many people who do take their secret to the grave. I would guess that the number who do that is probably much higher than the number who come out as trans.

The New Zealand study in 2013 based on a questionnaire of high school students said the 3.7% of those polled identified as transgender. It does not mean that they would transition.

The Australian Workers survey of LGBTIQA people in the work place came in with 7% people who were gender diverse as opposed to being LGBIQA. This was interpreted as these people identified as transgender, obviously this is open to discussion.

The rated reported for people seeking counselling at the gender clinics in Australia is suggesting the 3-4% level may be accurate.

However Australia and New Zealand are (generally) openly accepting of transgender people and have strong anti-discrimination laws. When prohibitive laws are passed the number of people seeking help drops.

This is consistent with findings from other countries where numbers of 1 in 40 persons are cited.

There is also an age relationship. Breaking that down for reasons is very difficult.

Theories: The 50-80  group had DES that my have affected androgen receptors (totally not proved) but the influence suggest a ground for study.

In young people strong evidence for oestrogen mimics crossing the placenta due to environmental poisons. Again no proof, but needs researching if any funding body would give a damn.

There is a whole volume of the Journal of Psych Medicine dedicated to trans research published this month (don't quote me I need to check my emails of which journal it was).

Including the Amsterdam study on MRI on transgender brains that I heard in Bangkok in 2014.

Lovely study. But as ever not definitive.

No wonder I enjoyed playing dress up with my mothers lipstick, jewelry, high heels, nail polish when I was 5-6 years old. Except that I thought I was a girl til my first grade teacher told me otherwise, uggg.
