South Carolina sheriff says he would 'whip' trans woman in restroom

http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2016/04/south-carolina-sheriff-says-he-would-whip-trans-woman-in-restroom/

LGBTQ Nation/By Bill Browning Friday, April 15, 2016

"Video of Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright speaking at the Greenville-Spartanburg Republican Women's meeting shows the county's top law enforcement officer threatening bodily harm to any transgender women who uses the ladies' restroom in his presence. The video was posted by a conservative podcaster and shows the sheriff discussing South Carolina's proposed ban on public accommodations nondiscrimination protections for transgender people."

You really have to wonder where this insane hatred comes from.

It would take a good psychologist to explain it.  It's bad when hate and politics mix, as is happening now in the USA.

Since it's being sponsored by evangelical Christian groups across the country you don't have to wonder for very long.

I saw that today. This stuff makes me sick. Once long ago the Mobile, Alabama police took me in custody, back seat of their car for 30 minutes & threatened to put me in jail with their bad men. If you want to become a woman, these men will have a go at you......they will have fun with you & we will let them. Damn this is bad for everyone, enough already. I was just dressed nice in a public park, not bothering anyone....just enjoying the park & pigeons.

It's bad over here. Maybe your country is more accepting but not in South, USA.

Hang on, what's he doing hanging out in the ladies room?

... oh wait, he admits to cross dressing later on in the piece, and doing a bad job of it...

He's just jealous.

Some of these police "ppl" are just down right mean. I've dealt with a lot of them.

I have to wonder why Sheriff Wright would be in there for me to use it in his presence.
April 22, 2015, the day of my first face to face pass in gender neutral clothes and no makeup. It may be months to the next one, but I'm good with that!

Being transgender is just a phase. It hardly ever starts before conception and always ends promptly at death.

I think I'm going to rant for a while on the subject 'cause I'm bored, pay no attention!

I think it's a combination of paternalistic sexism (notice how he said men's room vs girl's room), a perceived threat to their masculinity (giving up being a male to try and be a female? preposterous!), and possibly a threat to their sexuality (if they're attracted to a trans-woman but still consider that person male). When they feel that any of these 3 things are under threat they respond in one of the few ways they know how, with violence.

To go deeper into that mentality, and at the risk of projecting my own issues onto them, they've been told who they're supposed to be, who they're supposed to love, and how they're supposed to act, for their entire lives. To introduce free thinking to them, or to give them that level of agency over their own lives, would create too much potential for regret. Regret in how they've treated innocent people in the past, wasted time being who they don't want to be, or avoided something that would otherwise be important to them. It would introduce the possibility that they're an awful person, and it would put their soul at risk of eternal damnation.

Ever tried to have a discussion with one of these kinds of people about morality? They simply can't comprehend how anybody can be moral without basing that morality on the ten commandments or similar religious doctrines. Or, at the very least, the rule of law (drugs are bad, mmmkay? they're bad because they're illegal, and they're illegal because they're bad), because they've allowed themselves to be told how to think their entire lives. Evidence or experienced based world views are dangerous to them, and anybody who doesn't share their views and adopt them through the same methods are necessarily immoral. And so why would an immoral person want to use the women's bathroom? For no good reason, that's why. Deviancy is the only possible explanation for them.

If you were to start tugging at any of the 3 threads I listed at the beginning of this rant you'll completely unravel a person like him. The older they are the more difficult it becomes to face reality from the sort of brainwashing they've endured, the more baggage there is, and the less likely they are to apply any amount of critical thinking to their lives. They'll go to the grave first, which is why we basically just have to wait for them to die out.

I think they can make limited concessions in some cases, basically compartmentalizing doing the right thing yet maintaining their twisted world-view, if someone they really love creates a moral dilemma for them. Sometimes they'll react even worse because the threat hits so much closer to home, but there is the potential for a "freedom for me but not for thee" style mentality (well it's okay if my family member has an abortion because it's a special circumstance, but nobody else should be able to) or even allow a single, narrowly defined view to evolve a bit (well my daughter is a lesbian, which I guess is sort of okay. I mean, gay people are still gross but I guess as long as they're not hurting anyone).

And there you have the modern day bigot and how they rationalize that bigotry. Or at least, that's what -I- think is going on.

Here's some pretty music :)

Yeah, he calls women "chicks" at a women's meeting, too.  ::)

I'm sure this sheriff is proud of himself for being a big bad "pee pee cop". Maybe we should all go back 100 years like he's trying to do. Tar & feather him & throw him out of town....

Granted I am getting older myself, but I don't think the bigotry is correlated with age.  There are lots and lots of transphobic younger people (and lots of allies of transgender people who are older).  I wish it were so simple, but I don't think that bigotry just dies out, whether is is transphobia, racism, antisemitism, or you name it.

I know one place. Nobody is born hating or even knowing the difference between boy and girl so it has to be a learned experience. Like driving in a new city you get lost and confused. Once you get accustomed, you wonder what all the fuss was about. They are scared not of you but of themselves. Afraid they might discover they have dysphoria too.

I think you hit the nail on the head.  Sometimes, when dealing with dinosaurs, the best you can do is to pray that the comet gets here soon.
