I'm nearly 17, awkward, FTM transgender, look really young, 5' 5" and I'm living in the "Bible belt." I'm so scared of getting a job because all of that.

Where did you get your first job? Did you work at like a department store or did you do work for your neighbors or something?

What would you like to do ?

Are there stores where mainly women are present ?

You could do some work for neighbours ... like a shopping service, getting what they need ...

Don't be scared just observe basic safety rules.
If people are scared it tends to show. Show some self confidence if possible

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but you may be better off applying as female just to get the job (provided you're not on hormones or something else that makes passing as female impossible.) Once you have a job, getting fired could be construed as discrimination depending on state laws protecting transgender individuals.

Alternatively, there are several companies known to be very trans friendly (target comes to mind). Applying there as trans might be a good option. Ask local trans people for more ideas as well because they may know good places to apply or places to avoid.

I don't necessarily agree with this. I think that if Tyler can find a decent employer, he could tell them up front which pronouns he prefers to be addressed as and the name he wants to be called. I did that when applying for volunteer work. I know it's not the exact same thing as employment. But yeah, lots of them play by the book and will probably refer to him by the the gender and name he was assigned as at birth. This is a huge reason why I am afraid to start work after I graduate from college. It's just one of those things you gonna have to learn to tolerate. Hopefully, it will only last (and hurt) for a little while. Not forever.

I am MtF Transgender, I am thinking of starting hormones but have not so I am still very much in boy mode at work but my HR knows I am seeking options. I work for Marriott hotels and they are very much LGBT friendly. We have multiple people in the hotel I am in working that fall into this category and I'd like think it would be a safe and non judgmental environment when you consider the management. I can not speak for your fellow co-workers but who cares what they think. Hope this helps.

I had my first job at a Supermarket called "New World" (based in New Zealand.) I worked as a Checkout Operator and had applied as male despite looking completely female. However it was a lot easier for everyone to understand my situation because the department I worked for, my sister was the 2IC (second in command.) The HR and the Store Manager had a meeting with me to discuss concerns with my name tag, the toilets I will be using and all things that were gender related and everything went well . Don't be afraid to apply as female or male, let the people know you're applying to that you are a transgender and let them know of your circumstances. You will get employers that will support you and more than often you'll encounter ones that don't. When you encounter these employers, don't stress about it, there are so many people/companies out there that are trans friendly and would love to have your skill-set (whatever it may be) on their team! I encourage you to not be afraid and to do what you feel is best for you! I've currently applied for at least 20 jobs over the past two weeks and have 5 interviews ready!
