North Carolina leaders react to DOJ threat on bathroom law

AP May 5, 2016, 10:50 AM

McCrory and House Speaker Tim Moore, who helped pass the law the governor signed in March, said separately they would be examining the state's options. Moore told reporters the letter to McCrory was an attempt by President Obama's administration to push a "radical left agenda" in his final months in office.

"Basic concepts - common sense about privacy and expectations of privacy - are getting thrown out the window by what the Obama administration is trying to do in this," Moore said.

Just like in the days of civil rights the cock roaches are running for cover after the light has been turned on.

The other thing I love about this is their claim that they needed more time to respond to the DoJ notice.  Then they beat the deadline by filing their own lawsuit, which sort of suggests they had all the time they needed to do what they wanted to do.  But they're whining about not having enough time.
When in doubt, ignore the moral judgments of anybody who engages in cannibalism.

The next thing we'll hear is how badly they're being persecuted.  There is a common script that I think they all read from.

Love is not obedience, conformity, or submission. It is a counterfeit love that is contingent upon authority, punishment, or reward. True love is respect and admiration, compassion and kindness, freely given by a healthy, unafraid human being....  - Dan Barker

The time for them to think about the consequences of the law was BEFORE they enacted it.  But they were in a terrible rush back then.  They called a special session and crashed through with Hate Bill 2 in under twelve hours.  They didn't want to slow down and think it through, or let the people of North Carolina weigh in.  Now they are stuck trying to avoid cleaning up their own mess.

Can someone please explain to me exactly what the DOJ wants. I assume that men can choose to use the female bathroom and that females can use male bathrooms ?

There is no requirement for ID change in gender?

This will be purely a personal choice?

Apologies for my ignorance, I'm not a US citizen but will be visiting the USA at year end.

When we first start our journey the perception and moral values all dramatically change in wonderment. As we evolve further it all becomes normal again but the journey has changed us forever.

Meanwhile, I hope the DOJ can follow through with the threat of withholding funds for the duration. I really do want to see that. Not to punish the students... but to make a strong point: Thou shall not infringe upon the rights of ANY individual.

No, the position of the federal government is that it's not just a matter of personal choice.  It means that trans men and trans women should be permitted to use restrooms and similar facilities that correspond with their lived gender identities.

This is necessary because some backwards jurisdictions (North Carolina, Mississippi) are trying to require trans people to use restrooms according to the sex listed on their birth certificates.  For example: Under the North Carolina law, a fully-transitioned M to F individual is required to use the men's room, and vice versa for an F to M individual.  This is an outcome that bristles with possibilities of harm and disorder.

It's not framed in terms of ID change because not all TG folks have modified their identity documents to conform to their gender identity.  In fact, in some backwards jurisdictions, they can't modify the documents.  Or can't unless they have undergone expensive and painful gender confirmation surgeries, which not everyone wants or can afford.

But no, random men can't just to decide to use women's restrooms on a whim.  That's a myth propagated by bigots that want to suppress TG rights.

Welcome to America!  You'll meet a lot of wonderful people here!

Or maybe escorting us into the proper restrooms using National Guard troops with bayonets...?
...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

Same as any civil rights. Reactionaries always try to turn the clock back and fail. That ship has sailed.

Can you imagine if there was genuine action and concern for safety? Money spent on therapists for families, education, combating rape culture on campuses etc? No that would be too "liberal of an idea"

The strange fact to me is that those signs on restrooms were never meant to be a legal barrier to entry for anyone. Trying to make them such is stupidity.

Where do nonbinary folk get to pee if there are only binary options?

Whichever restroom they are most comfortable in.
