Hello, all!

So I've been shaving my legs for a few months now and still having some difficulty with it. Mainly because I keep cutting myself a lot or can't really get the knee area covered. Then there's my thighs. Seems like I miss a lot of spots there too. I do have really bad eyesight, so usually when I'm shaving, I'm doing so in the shower without my glasses on. Any tips that can be provided for a less harmful and thorough shave??

Also, my legs seem to have a lot of black bumps and dots all over.. Really embarrassing.. Kinda makes me feel and look like a plucked chicken :/ Wanted to post a photo of it to better show what I'm talking about, but looks like photos need to be on an image hosting site first?

Maybe I need to try exfoliating? I really don't know :(

Are you using a women's razor?  These work better for most parts of the body than a man's razor, which is adapted for the shapes found in a face.  I found that switching to a Venus razor from the facial Gilette cuts way down on my blood loss... ;)

The bumps are the result of shaving close and will fade as time goes on. As you have vision issues, you might consider an electric razor as it doesn't shave as close and you can use your glasses.

The easiest way of shaving your legs is - don't! Get them waxed until the hair growth is reduced and becomes manageable. If you are still in guy mode don't panic, many men get their legs (and bodies) waxed - just look at cyclists, swimmers, cage fighters and wrestlers - they all have hairless bodies. It is quite normal and many waxing salons display prices for men and women. Once under control shaving is easier and as Michelle said use a female razor and use lots of soap, hot water and relax. (I tried wearing my glasses in the shower by accident and it doesn't work BTW, but don't tell anyone)

I do know that for many people spironolactone changes the male hair growth cycle to a female one at least for body hair and it becomes less of an issue as hair growth can be dramatically decreased.

- exfoliate before and after you shave

- use a those fancy mens razors like 5 blade mach5, if not try to get a razor with as many blades as possible that you can afford.

- use steaming hot water and a quality shaving cream or decent conditioner

- shave at end of hot shower when pores are open

I shaved my legs a few times but didn't like the stubble and the hair regrowing so quickly so I bought a wax kit and waxed them myself

After awhile the hair just quit growing back

This is the kit I used: (Although I bought it at another shop)

It was fairly simple and I still use it on my bikini line and underarms

I'm still using my men's Gillette Mach3 which has held up well for shaving my arms and legs. As Lady Oracle says, it's best done in the shower after you've finished showering. I soap up my legs one at a time, turn down the water to a small stream, so i can wash off the blades, and then shave, often repeating areas, or overlapping them as i go. For my knees, i often bend my legs to tighten the skin. I just hate shaving though. I DO love the feeling of smooth legs, but the stubble begins on the second day, so if i don't shave every two or three days, things get ugly.

I'd say take a bath not a shower so you can use your glasses to help you see what you're doing and get a sharper razor you don't have to be as harsh when shaving them although it can still cut so be careful, but back when i shaved my legs i used better razors and it solved my problem it was fairly simple.

I agree with this.

I prefer a shower just cause I can consistently heat up the razor better (super hot temps) rather than using the bath water that isn't that hot to begin with or getting a separate bowl. I also have pretty bad vision so I've always had to rely on my sense of touch, shaving blind sucks but it's doable. Its the only downside to shaving in the shower, oh and basically doing yoga lol.

Read this thread with interest. About to commence my first leg shave. Maybe I'll wax instead. I have some Veet Warmwax. I think that is the go... :o :o

Back when I shaved my legs, I did it after I took a shower.  But it was with the water turned off.  So it wasn't steamy anymore, and I could see where I was shaving.

After I started HRT, my hair growth changed.  The hair on my legs grew back much slower and were thinner.  I switched to using an epilator instead.  I can epilate my legs without having to be in the shower or using any shaving cream.  It's faster, cleaner, easier, and cheaper (don't have to buy shaving cream or new razor blades).  The results last longer too, because the epilator pulls out the entire hair, down to the root.

But now I'm just tired of epilating too, even though I only have to do it once every 3 days or so.  I think I'm going to get laser hair removal treatment on my legs so I never have to shave my legs again.  :)  I did laser hair removal on my underarms 3 times, and I've never had to shave there again since.

Ditto on the depilating and on the laser (underarms done, legs and bikini almost done).  One note on the shaving, I know people tend to say shave with the direction of your hair.  I find that I'm far more likely to cut myself shaving down over my knees rather than up against the grain.  Also, I tried wearing my glasses, but they get steamed, and it's so dark in our bathroom, I invariably miss jurassic-sized hairs pretty regularly, noticing them immediately as I step outside.

Wow! Lots of info!

As for the razors I use, I currently use 4-bladed razors from Dollar Shave Club. Considering how often I have to shave my face, the affordability and quality can't be beat! I may try to get some different razors. Waxing seems interesting. Is it a difficult process to do solo?

Now, as for exfoliating, I honestly have no idea how to do so. I'm just aware that exfoliating is a thing. I lack so much knowledge on this sort of stuff :(

I obsessively shave everyday in a bath. I find that doing it under a shower will make it bleed really badly. Itches like crazy afterwards. I still have plenty of the bad hormone rampaging around, so that's probably getting in the way.

I have been shaving my legs for decades (trans cyclist) and have found a few tricks for avoiding the need for transfusions when done...

The more blade the better!  Cheap razors are fine for spot shaving (think knees where hair stubbles back quickly), but a good razor with 3+ blades (marketed to either gender) will leave you as smooth as you can get.  Oh yeah, get one with a pivoting head.  This will save you some snicks and scratches.

Shaving cream and HOT water.  Soap will work in a pinch, but cream will help keep the bumples from forming.  Hot water will allow the follicle to relax the hair and the razor will trim it that extra little bit deeper.

Finally, take your time.  I can shave my legs fast, a few minutes and I am out of the shower...but I miss spots and that looks bad.  Take an extra few minutes and feel where you are shaving with your hand.  You will catch things that you missed visually.

For all of this, I am making my first waxing appointment for this weekend.  Final seasonal beach party and I want to be smooth!  HRT has lessened my need to be so BHC (body hair conscious), so it is now time to try out what all my friends keep mentioning.

Go to YouTube and search "sugaring wax recipe and tutorial."  from what I understand it lasts longer than shaving and is fairly easy to apply.
