Hey all, I have been wanting to do some Mauy Thai classes for a while now. I want to learn to stand up for myself in face of a physical altercation may ever arise (like walking down a wrong street in a big city ect). I beleive that everyone should do this or take some form of self defense  tbh, but i wont lie i am a bit skiddish.. I used to rough house a bit as a kid (more or less friendly) and some in my family used this as a reason why i am not ''truly trans'' and that girls dont think about these things. I want to do this  but I got the insecuirty. Any advice?

Self defense is better than not knowing self defense. I  always worry when I see a twenty something year old mention it, though. The reason being they usually want to be  able to protect themselves...from men...men who usually start karate at age eight. Just saying.

Should i still try it or am I a lost cause to start at 23?

It's good fitness. Like I said, I'm afraid some people are setting themselves up to bring a knife to a gunfight.

You're never too old to begin to study martial arts.. just understand it becomes more difficult the older you are. I started in my 40's, and am enjoying it, just got my 1st degree dan in Karate.  Keep in mind 'black belt' means you're barely qualified to begin learning, it in no way means you're some bad ### that can take on the world.  I've never had to use it.. I never plan on using it, but the skills are there should the need arise.  I plan on getting away from any fights if at all possible.

And yes, being a female... at least for me, I'm weaker and have less overall stamina than usual for my female AND male counterparts.  (post op  15+ years, and not enough on HRT does a toll). Expect them to be a lot tougher than you.

Go for it lady.  The point isn't to fight, It is to be aware of where your environment is taking you.

Good Luck and Have Fun,

I began this journey when I began to think, but it took what it took for me to truly understand the what and the why of authenticity.  I'm grateful to have found a path that works and to live as I have always dreamed.

The dates are unimportant and are quite stale now.  The journey to truth is fresh and never ends.

Look at something that is as much offense as it is defense. Wing Chung Do or krave Ma ga (spelling is totally wrong) these will be the best if you are wanting to know how to defend yourself in the face of single to multiple adversaries.

There is no best, except that you enjoy it enough to work your ass off. Best self defense is to get stamina to run hard and fast. If you are stuck, work in arts that stun, create distance so you can run away. A fair amount of size makes up for years of training when it comes to infighting. Add an affliction shirt, ams who knows? :) do it because you love it, or just get fit

I was one grading away from the first part of my black belt for judo when the club folded as the teacher left. There was no one to replace him. I went on to help teach self defence classes and the first thing we taught was to avoid the conflict in the first place and ways in which to do it, then and only then was it permissible to use force in self defence. The style we taught was very much about putting the attacker down and out quickly and then removing yourself from the immediate danger....Based on an Israeli army self defence course I believe...back in the day anyway...

The biggest thing to do for self defense is in the mind.
First, learn and practice situational awareness.
Second, using the first avoid situations that will lead to problems.
Third, if you can't avoid it then try to talk your way out of it and then leave.
Fourth, if talking doesn't work then have a firm mindset that someone is going to die, you or the other one.
Fifth, learn enough of some technique so that you are confident you can make the other one die.  (This confidence shows in body language which goes a long way towards making others not start a problem to begin with)
Sixth, develop a high level of physical fitness so that you can effectively use whatever defense technique you learn.  (This includes both strength and aerobic fitness and also allows you to naturally project mind beams that tell others you are not a victim)

I actually signed up today for a trial class with one instructor today... I wanted to do it last 5 years and only did today... Too bad I won't be able to wear my best dress and waterproof mascara there

I actually went for my first class yesterday and been the only guy there. After fitness warm up, we practiced on something that can be called women self-defense (what to do when some guy grabs you from the back). Slap him in the groin, followed by other friendly punches.

It feels good to go to gym, and any MMA kind of sport is not male-only.
