Hi, I only recently realized i'm transgender. Most of my family knows but i'm not out in public and honestly i'm really scared and unsure about how to aproach it.

What helped me the first couple times was attending get-togethers with a couple of trans social groups in the area. My first time out was at a party at a personal residence of one of the members, which was really safe, followed by group meetings in restaurants and taverns. Being with a group really helps with the anxiety.

After three or four of those, my wife and I ventured out on our own in known LGBT towns, and I finally got to where I went to see my therapist and endocrinologist, followed by going to a restaurant, dressed and solo. I've only really been at this since June, so it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it. So far we've had zero problems.

A lot depends on whether such groups exist in your area. There are two really active groups here in central Florida, though I have to drive about 1:20 to get to either one.

Try doing an internet search for transgender support groups in your area.

Thanks for the advice. My doctor reckons theres heaps of trans people in my area and there does seem to be some trans friendly places i can go, so i think i'll have to see whats up. It's ironic that i used to be insecure about looking like a teenage boy with a girly voice and no partner in my 20's [emoji3] but now it seems like real good luck that i look how i do and i dont have a partner who has to deal with finding out their man is acually a women.

Coming out can be really scary and fraught with fear. I did it in stages as most do. I told my Wife, My brother, My Dr, My therapist, my other siblings, My Parents, my extended family, my friends and colleagues, acquaintances....In the latter half I wrote letters to, before my announcement and change of name. I told my own family in person and right up until recently had thought I had managed to one of the rare ones who didn't lose a single family member.

Some people just take longer than others to show their true colours. You will find out who your real friends are and who can rely on. One thing I learned is that peoples first reaction will not always be the same and their last.
