Hi everyone,

I've decided to sign up here after procrastinating for so long to ask for some advice relating to Anti-Androgens.

I've been taking Estrogen for almost a year now and am attempting to identify more with the female spectrum.

I would say I identify as gender non-binary at this present moment, though in the future I would like to feel comfortable identifying as MtF transgender.

At my last appointment, I asked my Gender Specialist about the possibility of Anti-Androgens; I want less visible masculine traits.

My physician has advised that before I take the plunge to use Anti-Androgens, I ask any other people who have experienced the same thing to tell me a little about what happened to themselves.

Would anyone be willing to tell me a little about what effects Anti-Androgens had on your body (from a MtF point of view?)

I've heard there is a noticeable change to the genital region too if anyone can share their experience?

For me, I really struggle with my appearance and acceptance.. I particularly despise my body hair.

It grows SO fast (after only a day) and I'm losing my mind trying to maintain its removal.

I've tried everything and am currently on a regime of waxing, bleaching and epillating.

I've also tried laser/electrolysis and am saving for more sessions..

Can anyone also share if their (body)hair growth has slowed? (I am not under any illusion it will stop or disappear altogether..)

Any information would be so valuable and greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Much love,

S

YMMV!  I've been on spironolactone for 13 months.  My body hair growth had slowed quite a bit.  We're talking chest, legs mostly.  Some allowing on the arms and I'm hoping more there.  The hair in the genital region has not changed.

I'm interested in this same question, so tagging along and in a free bump, can I ask you how laser hair removal worked for you? I've seen the marketing before and after shots and of course that all looks amazing, what is your real world experience?

Hey Denise, thanks for sharing!! That's really good to hear! Hopefully I will experience something similar.. :D

Hey Katiekatt, thanks for the bump! xD
Uhh for me laser hair removal worked short term.. it made my arm and leg hair patchy.
Laser hair removal isn't really a permanent solution though! (From what i've heard from other people and personal experience.. I think I heard electrolysis was the only 'permanent' method and even then it could grow back..)
I had laser on my legs near two years ago now and almost all of the hair has started to grow back. :(
My arms were more recent, maybe a year ago now since I finished my sessions.. though I can already tell its not as patchy as it was..
I do think it depends largely on how fast your hair grows though.. as well as thickness, colour etc..
Maybe laser hair removal while on hormones/anti-androgens could be super effective?

A sufficient E level is all that's required to suppress T, there's no real need to take an AA.

My understanding is that a sufficient level for some is very high and that its safer to take AA and lower estrogen.

Yes, for some it is "high", depending on what guidelines you use. B ut, given the issues with AA's, doesn't it make sense to attempt T suppression without them?

Was it IPL or "real" laser?

My body hair has thinned and slowed its growth considerably.  It has also changed color and texture so that even weeks, or months, after shaving it remains virtually invisible.

If you want to erase male traits then there are no downsides to anti androgens. If you still want to look and pass make in the long term then that is the downside as it will become difficult.

I started estradiol and spironolactone together, so I don't really know which effects are due to which medication.  I know that when my doctor reduced my S for a few months, I had an increase in violent mental imagery and an increase in the size of my genitals.  Neither went back to pre-HRT levels, but the changes were in that direction.  My boobs also stopped growing, might have even shrunk a bit.

I am back on the full dose now, and things are going back to where they belong.  My doctor is reluctant to give me a high dose of E due to my age, although I am in better health than most of her younger patients.  So I pretty much have to use an AA in order to keep my T levels down.

Hi Stevie,

I spent quite a bit of time with laser and electrolysis for a couple years before starting HRT.  I am half Japanese and half Welsh and had plenty of body hair and a thick dark red beard - all gone now and I haven't used a razor in a long time.

IPL is not laser.  "Intense Pulsed Light" is the least effective form of hair reduction when compared to laser or electrolysis.

When I went for HRT the encocrinologist mentioned I wouldn't need an Anti-Androgen to reduce body hair because I have pretty much none left.  That isn't the only reason for an AA but can apparently be a factor in the decision.  Many things influence each prescription - lab measurements of existing hormone levels, health history, goals, etc.  I was prescribed just Estradiol alone and on my first follow-up the same prescription was doubled.

When you get the chance it would be great if you can introduce yourself over in the Introductions Forum.

All the best,

Kendra

Megan.

I'm on  E and GNRH AAs,  for me I would more relate the following changes to my AAs.

*decrease in body/hair oilyness
*thining ,  slowing and lightening of body hair
*cessation of all spontaneous erections
*reduction in ejaculate quantity
*almost total elimination of libido

Hope this helps,  I have an active thread where I detail my HRT experiences to date. X
