Hi All,

I would like to announce a momentous event in my life. I just received my amended birth certificate with my new name and I am totally legal as of this time, I think. Bring on the bathrooms from the crazy places! lol I expected it to be highly emotional, but I am just numb for a couple reasons. One, this nasal surgery has kicked my butt and I feel like the walking dead these days. Two, why aren't these things never just done, simple, over and out. Let me get your thoughts, please. Everything seems correct on the certificate except for one thing. They list my mailing address correctly at birth except for the town. They list the town as the town next to mine where the hospital was located. I am not sure if I am being OCD worrying about this or maybe I should suck it up and resubmit to the process again to get it fixed. It is hard to finally have that paper in my hot little hand and have to ship it right back again. So what do you think? Please don't tell me I'm crazy. I already know that. So close to being legitimately crazy.
   Monica ::)
If I ever offend you, let me know. It's not what I am about.

Megan.

Firstly,  many congratulations! That is wonderful news,  and must be a great feeling.

Regarding the inconsistency,  do you think it is a pure error,  or due to some boundary/jurisdiction thing,  and is 'correct' as they see it?

I think they use the location where the birth was recorded, the hospital.

Congrats dear sister!!!

The birth certificate is a great feeling... I suspect Devlyn may be right about the location ( my CA certificate shows the hospital city)  but if it is going to keep you in a state of OCD for a good time to come, I would make an inquiry to see about amending or if it is considered correct as it stands!!!

Sending good and healing thoughts your way!!!

Monica   You have given me so much support with your well thought out expressions. I am so very happy that all is going well for you. My birth certificate lists my place of birth as Downey California. But I lived next door in Norwalk. I was born in Downey Community Hospital. So I don't think it identifies the place you live but rather the city you were born. While living in the same house my sisters certificate lists Artesia as the place of birth as she was born at the Artesia hospital.

Unfortunately, it lists the place of residence down to the street address of my house but it is the wrong town. It seems to be a mistake. In New York, their are groups of towns that belong to 'townships.' The two towns are in different townships.

Thanks for the well wishes. Oh, it is Monica, so you should be able to get that right Laurie?

Moni, what did your old certificate list as an address? The powers that be should be able to replicate that with just the name and gender changed, one would think.....oh but this is the government we are talking about.

Congratulations on getting at least a partially correct paper in your hand.

Anne

Well Moaning,

I have to agree with you it does look like your birth certificate is different in that it lists your residential address and does indeed appear to be in error on that tidbit. But hey! They got the IMPORTANT stuff right!! Rejoice!

  How did I do?

Now that is hilarious! Kudos Devlyn!

Anne, that is a good idea, I will check it out.

Laurie, in the words of Maxwell Smart, "Missed it by that much!"

So Roll is the name from the fact you rolled over the border to be born?  Was it in Augusta/ North Augusta area? I lived there a  few years. So if you change your name on BC do you do it in GA or SC?

It actually was the Augusta area, I'm impressed you guessed that! :D

I'd wager GA, because so far everything official I've ever received had to come from the state of GA and not SC. When I've had to get records or deal with people in the past (particularly with SS/Medicaid) they have been surprisingly flexible with the border issue though, because everyone in North Augusta has to use the government services in Augusta, so I guess the various offices there all know what they are doing in that regard.

Minor discrepancies or not, at least you were able to get a new birth certificate.

I'm from one of those states that won't change it no matter what. Transitioned 45 years ago and have never had a BC with the correct name or sex. Thankfully, I've never needed one but could never get a job in my industry these days without one. That's one reason I've been self employed since 1995.

In the U.S. this whole thing it a total crapfest. Some states will amend a BC showing the before and after changes. Some will issue a completely new one and seal the records that it has ever been changed. Some will issue a new one but leave a public record it's been changed that will be uncovered during a background check.

Some states require proof of SRS, some require some type of permanent physical change and all some require is a letter from a doctor. Some require a court order from a state other than the one you were born in. It's wildly and depressingly inconsistent. It's also one reason that bathroom laws based on birth certificates really make no sense when somewhere in the neighborhood of 21 states do not require SRS.

Ellie,
I lived there in 1980 to 82 time frame. I never liked Georgia much but Augusta was probably the best place I lived down there. It was kind of the obvious choice of where you were talking about to me.
I figured out that the address only is wrong. The town of the hospital is the same as the township of where I lived. I don't think I will be deported based on the wrong address only. Still it  bothers me it ain't perfect. Darn!

Yikes, sorry Lisa, that does suck. New York issues an amended certificate and the old one is sealed from anyone's view. I used a letter for GCS but it is not the only pathway. I am lucky. One day there will be a court ruling I would think to bring things in line.

The other day, I was watching "Guess who is coming to diner." It stuck me when they talked about interracial marriage being illegal in 20 something states that that is where trans folks find themselves now.

Hunh, I'm shocked, GA seems to be reasonable on the issue. Probably the Atlanta influence I'd imagine. (BC isn't marked as amended.)

One of those small world moments, you left the year I was born. Augusta isn't a bad place all in all, I left young originally but moved back and lived there from 2002 until 2014 and liked it there. I'm not sure I'd want to transition there, but it's always been bit of an outlier for the area in a lot of good ways, particularly considering it's not even that big (for whatever reason, it gets really good, even trendy, restaurants, has a great hospital system, etc). Prior to coming to terms with myself I was planning to go back up to the area, though now Atlanta is the only reasonable choice in state if I want to survive the next few years.

Congratulations on the birth certificate!  Sorry to hear that your surgery recovery is a pain, and that your BC isn't quite right.

At least I was a home birth, so the one thing I don't have to worry about is the address.  Everything else about it is going to be a PITA.  Especially the two-year wait, at the end of which I'll have to hire two British doctors to certify me.
