It's funny you mention this because I was just talking about this the other day with someone.  My transition song would have to be "A Voice Within" by Christina Aguilera. I'm a total lyric person, if the words are beautiful, I automatically like the song. I've always been that way. That's why I always liked a lot of emo and punk stuff, it spoke to me. Anyway, this song by Christina Aguilera really speaks to me and has for a while. It's basic theme is knowing how important it is to really listen to that voice within yourself and be strong even in the face of adversity. As transpeople, that's a message I think we can all relate to:

The Voice Within
Written by Christina Aguilera

Young girl don't cry
I'll be right here when your world starts to fall, ooh
Young girl it's alright
Your tears will dry, you'll soon be free to fly, ooh

When you're safe inside your room you tend to dream
Of a place where nothing's harder than it seems
No one ever wants or bothers to explain
Of the heartache life can bring and what it means

When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend just
Trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
You'll learn to begin to
Trust the voice within, ohh

Young girl don't hide
You'll never change if you just run away, ooh ohh
Young girl just hold tight
Soon you're gonna see your brighter day, ohh

Now in a world where innocence is quickly claimed
It's so hard to stand your ground when you're so afraid
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold
When you're lost outside, look inside to your soul

When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend just
Trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
If you'll learn to begin to
Trust the voice within

Ohh yeah, ooh, yeah ohh

Life is a journey
It can take you anywhere you choose to go
As long as you're learning
You'll find all you'll ever need to know
(Be strong)
Break it
(Hold on)
You'll make it
(Be strong)
Just don't forsake it because
(No one can tell you what you can't do)
No one can stop you
You know that I'm talking to you

When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
And like your oldest friend just
Trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
You'll learn to begin to
Trust the voice within, oh yeah

Young girl don't cry
I'll be right here when your world starts to fall, ohh

"Show Some Emotion" by Joan Armatrading

Knock knock.

Who's there?

Joan Armatrading.

Joan Armatrading who?

Joan, Armatrading in all my bubble gum cards to git you a ring, will you marry me?

Here's what I find about compromise--
don't do it if it hurts inside,
'cause either way you're screwed,
eventually you'll find
you may as well feel good;
you may as well have some pride

I constantly sang this during my transition, in the car, the shower, everywhere, lol... just To Keep Going...

Faith Of The Heart, by Watson Russell

It's been a long road
Getting from there to here
It's been a long time
But my time is finally near

And I can feel the change in the wind right now
Nothing's in my way
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No they're not gonna hold me down

'Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith, I've got faith, faith of the heart

It's been a long night
Trying to find my way
Been through the darkness
Now I've finally have my day

And I will see my dream come alive at last
I will touch the sky
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No they're not gonna change my mind

'Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith, faith of the heart

I've known the wind so cold, and seen the darkest days.
But now the winds I feel, are only winds of change.
I've been through the fire and I've been through the rain.
But I'll be fine.

Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
I can do anything
I've got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I've got faith

I've got faith of the heart.
I'm going where my heart will take me.
I've got strength of the soul. And no one's gonna bend or break me.
I can reach any star. I've got faith, I've got faith, faith of the heart.

It's been a long road.

Not just one song--
it's so hard to pick a favorite from among them.
Here's a few:
Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
Good Enough by Evanescence
A Long December by Counting Crows
Chocolate by Snow Patrol (but I prefer Charlotte Martin's cover)
Stockton Gala Days by 10000 Maniacs
J'attends l'amour by Jenifer

These songs just say something to me in one way or another.  They aren't necessarily inspirational, but there's just something about them.  Plus, I'm also just starting out, so the melancholy maybe is to be expected.  Of course, I am something of a "glass half-empty" kind of girl.  Can't help that.

And as a member of the Cult of Tori, pretty much any song by Tori Amos is good (of course there are exceptions, but let's not go there).  Songs like Pretty Good Year and Black Swan really do something for me.  Just like the other songs I've listed.  There's nothing particularly inspirational about the lyrics, it's more the tune, the feel of the song, a certain je ne sais quoi.

I've discovered two new ones, both by VNV Nation, to add to my list. I've been plugging them shamelessly to everybody who'll listen. (There just is not enough EBM and Futurepop in the world, frankly)

Illusion

I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all
The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand, Please, don't cry now

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you
Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

Being like you are
Well this is something else, who would comprehend?
But some that do, lay claim that
Divine purpose blesses them
That's not what I believe, it doesn't matter anyway
A part of your soul ties you to the next world
Or maybe to the last, I'm still not sure
What I do know is, to use the world is different
As we are to the world but, I guess you would know that

Carry You.

Conceal your deepest worries
Confine your thoughts inside
The walls you built of damaged pride
The light in your eyes failing
Like you're adrift
Like night pretending to be day
These storms subside

Though the past, the unwanted memories, are holding onto you
All the power in the universe conspires to carry you
Truths you find through your adversities will defend you
As your powers and all your energies conspire to carry you

The adversary to your soul
The blackest thoughts
That try to poison you
These storms subside
Lay down your greatest burden
Relinquish that which has control of you
And let yourself through

Though it seems the past and the future look the same
Suffice to say you're still here

For me it's:

"I'm Not a ->-bleeped-<-ing ->-bleeped-<-!"  From the cabaret song in "Better than Chocolate" sung by the movie's transsexual character.

Following my bliss.

She said "I could tell you a story that could make you cry"
"What about you?"
I said "Me too"
"I could tell you a story that will make you cry"
And she sighed "Ah"
I said "I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed"
"I like Lou Reed" she said sticking her tongue in my ear
"Let's go, let's sit, let's talk"
"Politics go so good with beer"
"And while we're at it baby, why don't you tell me one of your biggest fears?"

Oh man, I love Lou Reed, Frank Black loves Lou Reed, we all love Lou Reed!

My favorite LR song is probably Candy Says or How Do You Think It Feels?

I'm not transitioning...yet. It's more like I'm awakening.

Nevertheless, music has played an important role in the emotional expression of my life since I "discovered" it back in seventh grade.

My song would be "Skin" by Oingo Boingo.

"Skin" by Oingo Boingo

This is someone else's story
Someone that I never knew
This is someone else's body
Am I getting through to you
If you peel away the armor is something underneath
If you look below for hidden treasure underneath another layer
Are you hiding underneath the skin

If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the armor is it too late to begin
Is there anybody hiding if you peel away the skin

Now a spark has passed between us now
A momentary recognition
Something lost and something gained
And something shared that feels strange
Something cold that will not go away

There's a heart as cold as ice
In a vault that's made of stone
Over years the walls got higher
Over years the walls have grown

Is there anybody in there in this self inflicted tomb
If you peel away the layers is there someone in this room
If you peel away the skin, if you peel away the skin

This is someone else's story
Someone that I never knew
This is someone else's body
Am I getting through to you

If you peel away the armor is something underneath
If you look below for hidden treasure underneath another layer
Are you hiding underneath the skin

If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the skin is there anybody there
If you peel away the armor is it too late to begin
Is there anybody hiding if you peel away the skin

If you peel away the skin...

"I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let's make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we're together, we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?" - Fred Rogers

Found this, and it has become my absolute favorite song! ;D Now if only I could play my guitar that good.

Aimee B - Future in my hands
[yt=425,350]v/Rk06EieuGuM[/yt]

Standing where I should be
Believing as I'm told to believe
Being who I should be
Doing what I should do

Did you hear what I said?
Did you get what I meant?
What you saw is an illusion
You're living in delusion

Going on and on I have the future in my hands
Getting lose from days I never could get over
Going on and on until I'm finally myself
Getting out of this dishonest world I never wanted
Now is the time
Now is the time

Ask me if you're anxions
I'll give you all the answers
Truth or dare - it's your choice
Your truth is what you wish for

Who am I to tell you that the future's in your hands?
Set me free from lies and cold deceptions, I'm so scared
Going on and on across this land, across the time
Going on to see, to feel, to breathe
I've always wanted

Sleepless nights I'm spending
Counting all the words that broke my heart
I'm leaving all my past here
Then I'll see the world for sure

Going on and on I have the future in my hands
Getting lose from days I never could get over
Going on and on until I'm finally myself
Getting out of this dishonest world I never wanted

Now is the time
Now is the time

Chase after time
Chase after time.
