I contacted a therapist

I finally contacted a therapist by email and asked if we could schedule an appointment.  I'm nervous about sharing my deepest and darkest secrets to someone.  I think one thing that scares me most is that talking about my gender identity with a therapist will make this real.  Up till now being transgender has always been hypothetical, but sharing it with another human being?  I've never told anyone about this.  I even tried to deny it to myself.  I know that exploring his is for my own good, so I'm pressing forward.  I'm still scared.  But I'm going for it!!!

How did you overcome your fears about sharing this with someone?

Talking to a good therapist is quite easy after the initial fear. Remember that they have heard it all before, almost word for word. It's a bit like being on the Forum and reading the posts of others and you go, 'Wow that's how I feel!'

So try and relax, tell them what name you wish to be referred to and be honest. You will probably feel very relaxed and relieved afterwards.

I occasionally catch up with my ex therapist for a coffee and chat, I know her family and she knows mine and we are now friends who can talk to each other as only friends who have shared secrets can. We no longer have a clinical relationship.

So good luck, be brave and of course tell us all about it!

Try to keep in mind the therapist is there for you. What ever you say is in confidence. Therapy is for your good. These are some of what I reminded myself when I first started going.

I was nervous and embarrassed for the 2 weeks leading up to appointment but managed to strangely conquer my fears just a few hours before appointment. It may be you'll have nerves until the actual appointment but as Cindy says immediately after arrival, you'll feel relaxed and relieved.

Also therapists just like doctors, will never judge you.

I wish you all the best with therapy.

I know exactly how you feel. I was scared to death and had never told anyone but my girlfriend at the time. Your therapist will make you feel comfortable. Mine even ask me to begin with if I wanted to tell my story or would I like her to just ask questions. Within 5 minuets I felt like she was my best friend. Just be honest with them and you will be fine. :)
I wish you the best of luck.

You will find that in the initial meeting, that all your fears will be laid to rest.  A good gender therapist will create an atmosphere of trust and openness.  They are there for you and want to help you find yourself.  They will listen to you and help guide you in your thoughts.  You will be amazed how time will fly by as you talk about the main subject.....you.

Good luck and hugs, Jessica

It looks like I have my first appointment set for tomorrow late morning.  I'm still nervous about this, but your help and experience is giving me the courage to face my fears and do it anyway!!!
