High Metabolism and Weight Gain. Any Advice?

Okay so I have always had a high metabolism and I've always been underweight because of it.

I've been on hormones now for little over a year and my body has barely changed.

Now, I know the way the body really goes through these changes is through the redistribution of fat, but I just can't seem to gain any to redistribute.

So I'm hoping some of you can help me out, are there any specific things I should be eating that might help me gain fat quicker? Or anything that might slow down my metabolism enough that the little fat I do gain isn't immediately burned away?

I'd really appreciate it if you all could help me out on this.

It is hard.  I'm 5' 3" and my weight tops out at 115 if  I eat a ton of carbs.  But I get too much fat in my blood if I do that.  It may be better for me to be around 108.  When I was in the hospital they gave me high calorie chocolate milkshakes to get my weight up.

Do you know how many calories you need to maintain And how many calories you actually eat?  Generally speaking, if you eat more than you need, you'll gain weight. If you become less active given the same or greater caloric intake, you'll gain weight. Insulin will convert excess carbs into fat.  Of course it would be unhealthy to go down that particular road. Another way of putting on weight is eating over a time frame greater than 12 hours, particularly what you eat past the 12th hour.  Unless you have data, who knows. You could be under feeding yourself and doing intermittent fasting and not know it.

Make sure your taking in sufficient calories in you daily life and remember that in your teens and twenties you need more calories that somebody older. I used to be able to put nearly twice as many calories away as I can now without gaining weight.

This is a trick that should be used with caution. When my roommate was dealing with cancer, the chemo destroyed her sense of taste and took far to many pound off her. I had to work up some way of getting the calories into her that tasted reasonably good and it needed to be calorie dense. At that point, I wasn't as worried about a balanced diet as I was calorie count.

I hit on the following solution. In a blender, start out with a chilled liquid diet supplement like the ones they give elderly people when they don't eat enough or a packet of Carnation Instant breakfast with the correct amount of milk. Add regular Ice Cream until you have a thick shake. If you like malt, you can also add some of that to the mix. Three of these a day were enough to keep her weight under control and even put a few pound back on when she wasn't eating anything else.

Possibly one of these a few hours after dinner would add enough calories that you would gain a few pounds. Don't use these exclusively as they aren't a well balanced diet but for a limited period of time they shouldn't be an issue.

I think I'm gonna try this idea, I love shakes, hehe.

Really though I'm very absent minded so I'll never be able to keep track of my calories, honestly I'm lucky that I remember to take my hormones around the same time every day, though I doubt I'm eating enough considering I'm under weight.

Thank you for this, I never would of considered trying one of these shake things. :3

Now I just have to get a blender, hehe

I routinely snack on stuff like ice cream while cooking meals.  Except for breakfast.  :o

Oh wow, I just had one of those shakes. SO GOOD

Though if I may ask, how much ice cream did you put in? I'm not sure if I used enough?

Depends on how thick you want it. I mixed them thick enough that they were hard to get through the straw. I used the ice-cream directly out of the freezer and the finished volume was probably about 24 oz making it about 8 oz of fluid and 16 oz of ice-cream. The only thing that was measured was the fluid and the ice-cream was added according to thickness.

Hey buddy. I have high metabolism too. And like you I have trouble gaining weight. Do what Dena said, it's kinda similar to what my mom did when I started losing weight. She'd give me these delicious homemade milkshakes and they helped a lot. Hope things get better soon~ ☺

More calories help. But it's not as simple as just calorie counts. Your base metabolism is not a constant number. Your body wants to maintain itself in a fairly small weight range. If everything's working properly and you eat too much your body works to waste the calories so they aren't stored as fat. It does that through such means as just generating heat.   If you're under your body's desired weight range it sends hunger signals to the brain.  If your at or above the desired weight range the hunger signals turn off after just a little food.   All of those things are controlled by different hormones.

Look at your body type. From your description I'll assume you're an ectomorph. Your body is very good at wasting extra calories. So it's going to be difficult if not impossible to gain a lot of weight.

I'm a mesomorph. I can gain weight more easily. But only up to a point. Beyond that weight gain slows down considerably no matter how much I eat. Hunger also is greatly reduced and is satisfied with only a little food.

I think if there is a good insulin response with excess calories, over time fat will accumulate. There's no free lunch. It's like the keto religionists that believe if I just do keto at maintenance calories I'll lose weight. Sure, 10lbs of water. Beyond that, there has to be a cut in calories below what's needed and used. BTW, down 148lbs, 10 to go.
