I firmly believe if you toss a tennis ball into a room full of IT professionals you will hit 10 cross-dressers & 5 transsexuals.

Kindest regards, Kirsten.

Guilty as charged Kirsten.

25 years of software development here, 18 years more to go. I hope someone will hire me after my current company shows me the door after I come out.

Do I count?  Former EE specialized in data transmission, moved on to medical research!

Try that with actors and artists, I think almost all of the former are at it. They can always say it's work-related.

Great to see you Kylo.

I thought if you were in the arts or theatre you had to be trans otherwise they take you away for therapy!

Seems like a safe bet for any group of people. Engineers seem more likely to be fashion-challenged though.  ;D

That is why I left engineering, and went back to school to go into medicine.  We medical people don't need fashion, we have white lab coats!

You have to be able to put your mind in someone else's position so it wouldn't surprise me... if you don't go in having blurred the lines a bit you definitely come out having done.

The psychatrist I saw to get my referral letter, asked what I did. I said software development. He said, that is very interesting, a significant proportion of my clients come from IT related fields.

As a generalisation, he certainly found it had validity.

My goodness.(What a bitch!) Sounds like a comment a medical professional would make. I personally know an engineer with impeccable taste in fashion. See below

Waite a minute, no all medical professionals are bitches (well, I used to be an engineer, but white lab coats are really cool and absolutely fashion neutral)

Guilty as charged. Self taught auto mechanic/small engine mechanic as well.

Engineering is a field that sees a lot of us because it's a field with a lot of people who just think differently. I know this applies to me.

I sometimes think the rigid thought process and rigid behaviour is a factor. The masculine, rational, unemotional workplace is a contributor as well.

In our spare time we blow out. We like to put on a nice dress and some makeup and be the antithesis of our work self.

Great to see you Liz!

Kirsten.

Ahhh,

I think I pointed out before that there are a lot of IT professionals on this site. I have work in the IT industry and Telecoms industry for over 25 years.

I don't necessarily agree.  I think it is the innovative, out of the box thinking that is part of being creative (as engineers have to be) that allows us to also think out of the box when it is about our own self!

My working life started out as an electrical engineer, specialized in data transmission/communication (kind of IT, isn't it?).
That brought me into the medical filed, because all those implantables need to transmit data.  At some point I wanted to know more about all that biology involved, and I went back to school and studied medical stuff (exactly biomedical sciences), and I ended up in medical research.  Still doing innovative stuff and thinking outside of the box!

And now I am a trans woman, how about that?
