Well, the red state / blue state thing is a bit overstated. There are large minorities of people in "conservative" states that generally desire moderate/liberal policy, and there are minorities of people in "liberal" states that generally desire conservative policy. In Republican v/ Democratic matters, most of the states fall between 40-60% each way, and it's rare to see them stray outside 30-70%.
However...
The Daily Show two years ago had "Ah, a constitutional process to ban gay marriage? And yet that was the only time he mentioned it until now [in spring 2006, and the previous time was 2004]. It's as though marriage in our country is only threatened during even numbered years. It's the cultural version of raising the terror alert.
