Do you like using telephone call answering trees?  That is when you make a call, and a computer tries to route your call by giving you options to select from.  More advanced systems attempt to figure out what you want and tries to help you without involving a person to help you.

I do NOT care for them, unless there is a VERY EASY way to talk to a person, if I wish to, shortly after the call is connected!

Some of these answering systems make it extremely difficult to talk to a person.

Some are thoughtful in that it gives you an option to be called back instead of waiting on hold for a person, providing they actually call you!

I typically do not leave voice mails unless they promise to get back with within a set amount of time.  Before I do, I would call again to see if I can talk to someone to avoid leaving a message before relenting.

I have installed a few commercial telephone systems like that for business and government offices. Usually, you can bypass the menu by pressing "0" for Operator. On voice-activated menus, saying "Agent" or "Representative" can usually get you to a live agent. Not always, but that is how I had my systems programmed.

I have also tried the word "human."  Or "operator."  Or "service representative."

Some say to utter an expletive.

I hate them.  It is the same voice, no matter what the business is.  Whoever she is, she must get hired a lot.  The same darned muzak on hold, too.  The same "Please listen carefully, as our menu options have recently changed," even though the recording was made 10 years ago.  The same lie about "We are experiencing greater than normal call volumes."  No, actually this is the typical volume of calls you always get, all the time.

I think the person who came up with this idea also came up with the idea to glue down the first sheet of toilet paper on every roll... or maybe it was 'blister pack' packaging, guaranteed to draw blood when opened.

Well these rolls would be better than using newspaper.  Tough to get started on the roll or unwrap but it is better than the rolls unraveling or getting dirty. 

Probably all that fastening was done by machines.
