A musing...

Months ago I befriended a girl in transition and we became like sisters.  In my talks with her, I  began to tap the inner philosopher ( as I am wont to do in emotional times) and the result was this..a simple musing.

We all have a path to walk..all of us have different paths, but sometimes our paths cross each other, or even run parallel..In addition, we each bear a lantern to light our paths.

If my path and yours bring us into contact, I have a choice to make.  I can shine my light on your path, and make your steps safer...or I can try to knock the lantern from your hand.

If I knock your lantern away, what have I gained?  I must walk the rest of my path with the memory of what I did.  But if I shine my light on your path, I have gained a friend..and with that friend a light that will be there to shine if my path grows darker.

I believe that with sameness comes stagnancy.  Each time we meet someone who is different from us, we are blessed with an opportunity to grow as a person.

Well there you have it.  Not exactly poetry, but I try to live by these words.

Thank you for reading.

I found a wonderful T-shirt in a Virginia ashram several years back:  One Truth; Many Paths
When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take the step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for us to stand on or we will be taught to fly. — Patrick Overton
