Hi everyone,

I was just thinking, my hair needs trimming soon (it's been over 3 months ), and I don't want to do anymore guy style cuts. I need to experiment at this time, and I was wondering, if it would be safe to go to the barber shop, and ask for a feminine hair cut? Would society look at me really funny, or something? Or, do you think androgynous style would be better?

Take a picture of something you would like if possible now, or at least where you could be soon.  I would go to a salon, preferably get a nice woman, and tell her what you want.   I have something of a BOB cut that is just below the ears -- I love it--- but needs just a little more length.   I want to be able to tuck the forward hair behind the ears...

That's exactly what I did before going full-time. I first called to make an appointment and told them that I was looking to get a feminine haircut. "No problem," was her reply. When I went in I told the stylist that I wanted a feminine haircut, and I even went so far as to tell her why, and she became even more bubbly and went to town. She proceeded to give me a big hug before I left.

I say go for it. Screw what society thinks. It's just hair, right?

After the first week having it. You get over what other's thinks!

I have had my hair done up since march of this year.

I cheated a bit last year by wearing a scarf.  When march came peope would say i didnt know you had your hair like that. .

I had my hair cut recently and I didn't even get to open my mouth before I was asked "what kind of cut do you want ma'am?". I just told what I wanted and that was it.

Well before I came out I always trimmed my own hair myself. My hair was half way down my back which is now down to lower back. I have always went to hair stylist to get my hair styled. Many men prefer to go to hair stylists then a barber shop. The nail place I go to now with Wingwalker style our hair and they also do men's hair. Hair stylists do men's and women' hair both in most places if not all.

Only worry, very few of my SO know my secret, so they'd probably be wondering why I have a girly haircut, so I wonder what to do there... Maybe, using something to slick my hair back will hide it  .

By the way, to see a stylist, how much money should I prepare to shell out on average?

You'll want to go to a salon or something. Barbers do men's cuts.

Wing Walker tells me that a new styling can cost around $25.

Trimming the ends and bangs with a shampoo and blow dry is about $15.

She also told me that you shouldn't worry about having see that you are changing to a femme hairstyle as it will take months for it to grow enough for anyone to question it.

Tips:  If there is a woman who does your shampoo and another who cuts your hair, WW usually tips the shampoo girl $2 as a courtesy (she isn't overpaid) and the stylist $5 or more, depending upon the magic she works.

I didn't know the prices personally, I just go get it done then admire it in the mirror afterwards and WW pays the bill.

I have kind of thought about this as well. Right now I am pretty happy with my hair though (see avatar). It can certainly be done up in a very girl way but I believe it is still probably a guy's cut. I told my last stylist what I wanted and there was no real questions about it. I just went with Regis in the mall, 22 dollars I believe.

I'm just wondering though, my hair is running down my neck, and in my eyes easily if I let it, but it isn't long on the sides where my ears are (it covers my ears though), so I wonder if it is long enough yet to do anything, or if I should wait a while longer for more hair growth.

I live in the deep south and I can, with a straight face, just tell the barber to give me a chick's haircut.  I don't see any problems w/ it.

Sounds just about the same length as mine. I went in and basically just asked for a trim and that's what I would recommend for you. Getting it blended and the dead ends trimmed etc. is usually a good idea. I probably got less than 1/2 an inch off. The avatar is my guy style and you can go one thread down to see how it worked out for me in a more girlish style. Not the best probably, I just let my GF try a few things and that is the one we thought looked best. If I had shoulder+ length hair I have no doubt I would pass much better as female, but as a guy there are a lot less options to look decent. In high school I had hair past my shoulders and on more than one occasion I was referred to as she or in cases of people that knew I was male sometimes asked if I were gay.

Yeah, I was thinking just a trimming, to clean it up too (a lot of split ends), and something better looking too it. Gosh, hair takes too long to grow .

Tell me about it.  I've been growing mine for six months, and the back is just reaching the shoulders.  I think the sides stopped growing completely.  I don't know much about long hair, or how biogirls take care of theirs, so I don't know what I should do with it.  I'd love to get a really feminine cut, but I don't know if I've got enough hair in the right places.

I've been letting mine grow since my final buzz cut last winter. Occasionally it got trimmed, so I think that's why it isn't very long yet. I swear though, you cut 1/2 inch off, and it starts growing like a weed!

Really?  I've heard that before, that having it trimmed makes it grow faster, but I always thought that was a myth.

Anyway, how does that work?  I just go to a stylist and say, "trim it"?  I mean, up 'till March, I'd gotten the same haircut every since I was little.  I don't know how girls (or anyone) go about these things...

Yeah, I've been told it's a myth too, but I swear, my stops growing almost sometimes, I get it cut, and boom!

I don't know either, when I had it trimmed, it was still guy's cuts, but now this would be my first time going beyond that, so I'm new to it too.

Getting a feminine haircut as a guy:
I always did that from about the age of 12 onwards and I always had my hair quite long all the way through 

I cut mine most of the time, for the past 4 years now, its usually, full fringe with a medium or shorter bob-esque cut, looks very girly, moreso depending on how or in which direction the hair is styled.
