I am a newbie to this site. I hope I am posting in the right place to ask this. I am definitely ready to start seeing a therapist because I know I want top surgery and T but I dont know how to go about finding the right one. I called a few places that the glbt center referred me to but didn't have any progress because I dont know what to ask for like as far as are they a therapist that can write the letter for top surgery and I dont know the right terms to use to ask them if they do that. Also I am having a hard time finding one in san diego north county area. I dont want to waist my time either as I am older and ready to get started because I know it will take months. Do you have to go to a regular doctor to get a referral to a therapist or can you just call them and make an appointment. I have medical and does anyone know what is covered and what isn't. I know top surgery probably isn't but what about therapy and T? I been doing a lot of research but dont know how to start so any help as to what I need to do now and if anyone knows where I can start in the north county area of san diego would be really helpful!

Call the GLBT center and tell them you're looking to speak to a therapist about hormonal treatment. If you want to be upfront about it, just say you're a f2m, and are interested in starting hormones. They're there to help, and I'm SURE will point you in the right direction.
As far as insurance goes, you'd have to ask your provider. I know guys whose insurance covered there top surgery, lucky bastids!

Hmmm a lot of the answers to your questions depend on the specifics in your life.

I called my insurance company and asked for a Gender Identity Disorder therapist referral, and they gave me phone numbers. One of the phone numbers I happened to call belongs to my current therapist, she's GREAT and she's technically a "sexuality and gender" specialist but she can write me letters if necessary. My insurance covers the entire cost of each visit.
So my advice to you is.....Call your insurance company, don't leave them out of the loop. Use the term "Gender Identity Disorder Therapist" when asking for names and phone numbers of doctors. If that doesn't work ask for a therapist who specializes in "Gender and Sexuality." According to my therapist, no one specializes ONLY in GID because there's not much demand? (Not enough ->-bleeped-<-s in the world?) So if you see someone who specializes in G & S make SURE the first thing you ask is about whether or not they are qualified to write you letters to approve you for testosterone. I was not hesitant to ask my therapist, and she was glad to respond.

If that doesn't work, do some online searches and see what comes up. Then call and ask if they take your insurance.

Generally therapy can usually be covered by insurance. I can't say on the other stuff though but you have a long way to go (at least 3 months minimum) before you have to worry about T, AFTER you find a therapist you can see regularly. So there's plenty of time to look into it. You could always call your insurance too and see if they cover endocrinologist visits (that's who gives you T) and Gender Reassignment Surgery.

I know you want the right wording for things, so if you can be more specific about what you want to know, I can try and be of more help. Like say....you want to have your chest removed....I could tell you it's called a mastectomy? I don't know. I hope I answered all your questions bro. Welcome to Susan's by the way :)

Hey L, Here  is the number for the North Park Clinic in San Diego. You don't have to jump through all the hoops to use them just call and make an appointment for the Tuesday Night Clinic to get started on hormones.  That's all you have to say. 619-515-2449

I called the center in San Diego for the therapy sessions and was told it's at least a 6 month wait. So this therapist is cool and can get you right in. Patricia Wojdowski 858-292-0492 She maybe out of town at the moment (one of my friends goes to her and really likes her)

I'm near SD email me sometime and let me know how it goes and let me know where you are. i'd like somebody to go to meeting and stuff with...Camden
