It's kind of ironic. Film festival favorite, She's a Boy I Knew—which
has been racking up awards all summer long—was motivated by disgust.
Canadian filmmaker and media activist Gwen Haworth explains her
dissatisfaction with previous representations of trans folk: "I swear,
if I sit through another portrayal of victimization for the supposed
purpose of 'education and awareness', or another image of a trans
woman putting on high heels and lipstick, or another film that equates
gender transition to the metamorphosis of a butterfly, I'll vomit!"
Haworth self identifies as many things, including queer, female,
trans, humanitarian, sister, brother, daughter, son, dyke, DJ, shelter
worker, and scooter rider. She came out as transgender and
transitioned from male to female in 2000.
