Either way, the same short term gains traded off against a long term goal.

Over the weekend I was reading an article in National Geographic on the drying of the West. In it they were using tree core samples to measure droughts throughout the history of the Colorado River basin.  The thing that stuck out for me was they discussed two types of trees: 'complaisant' trees and 'sensitive' trees.  Complaisant trees do not feel the effects of drought.  Sensitive trees do and show the signs of it in their gnarled, twisted appearance as well as in their core samples.  The thing is, complaisant trees don't live as long as sensitive trees.  It seems that pain and suffering are necessary to a long life.

I have never had that state of 'perfect mental peace,' and I'm not so sure it would be good for me if I did.  I've been through a lot of pain and suffering in my lifetime.  Would I like to have avoided it?  Sure, but I would be a much different person if I had.  I still have a lot of suffering ahead of me.  But I know I need to go through it in order to grow and become the person I need to be for the sake of those I love and who love me.

QuoteI remembered a terrifying dream, but none of the details. I didn't want to think about it... If no one knows, it can be the same as if it never happened at all. So I'm secretly rewriting my memories. I've buried that scary dream. Because it never happened.

Avoiding the pain of the past, present, and future, will not make you stronger. But rather weaker.

There is a new book about American wimps. It seems parents are protecting their children from failure. Hounding teachers to give better grades and reduce homework, etc. The gist of the book is that children learn that they do not need to do their best thereby making wimp adults.  I grow Bonsai so I know about stressing plants. It is also true that people that reduce their caloric intake can slow down aging along with body functions. There are lessons learned from pain but why repeat the lesson. Then again would rather have 50 years of pain and 50 years of pleasure or 10 years of pain and 70 years of bliss?

The water tables are dropping due to industrialization from world over population. Water is more important than energy and no one is talking about it.

They don't seem to be aware of all that much, much less, something important.
