Question about transitioning on the job

Ms Jessica

I need some suggestions for information that can be given to my employer.  I noticed that anyone who has transitioned on the job has provided some info to their employer about GID, but I could use some help about good sources for info.  My own knowledge has come from several websites (including this one), various books and articles, but I don't want to give the HR people at work information overload.

Does anyone have suggestions for a few good sources with decent information?

should be able to find plenty of it in the wiki.

my best advice to you, if you're in retail, especially walmart, GET OUT and do it somewhere where you have protections for gender identity, not just sexual orientation. places like sears and jcpenney do list it in their discrimination policies.

other advice, if you want to keep a job at the same place, take 3-6 months off so people will forget "them" and only see you. my advice is totally 100% real life experience.

Nice.  Totally forgot about the fact there's even a wiki!  Thanks for the reminder.
Fortunately, I'm not in retail.
Thanks again for the tip!

LOL!  My thoughts exactly.

I'm really lucky with my work situation.  My boss has been really cool with everything, I came out to her a while back, told her I was getting laser and seeing a therapist.  Told her the other week that I got my hormone letter, and that will be starting soon.

Since our company is pretty small, she asked for some info since I am (pretty sure) the only trans person on staff.  Make sure that HR knows how to handle things, etc.  At this point I'm trying to keep them ahead of the curve so that nothing happens at work that we're all unprepared for.  Seems to be working so far.

Look under Susans Place Resources under transexuality, item 16. It is a good basic article on transsexuals in the workplace.

I understand why Mickie is down on retail.  She is at Wally World, bad scene.  But I also work retail, Lowe's as a matter of fact, and my transition at work is fantastic.  Lowe's is 100% behind me and two sisters and one brother in other stores.  Plus I live in Oregon and Trans people are protected by state law.  Unlike Mickie's state of confusion, sorry Ohio. :D  In the Wiki there is a section on transitioning at work in a package.  I used it when I can out and everything is going smooth.  There is only couple of the employees that do not talk to me anymore, but that is their problem.  And I pass about 99% of the time to customers. ;D

I printed out a bunch of stuff, edited it to fit me and my company, and spoke with my HR manager person yesterday.  She was like whatever, cool, gave me a hug, said there'd be no issues.  But then she hasn't spoken to the other managers yet, etc.  I'm not sure it sunk in why I had to come out to HR and not just announce that no, I'm not gay, I'm trans to my coworkers (um things like pronoun usage, non-discrimination, name change, you know, the legal stuff!).  So...

The ball is rolling.  I figured now that my DL says Jonathan and Male it was time to let the powers that be know.  After the HR person's reaction I may have put too much stuff in the packet.  Oh well.

Again for the second time today I get to thank you Janet for timely information and thoughts. The reference material you mentioned is just what I was looking for and should help me hopefully. Comming out in the workplace is very trying as you dont know what the end results will be, whether good or bad.

My current situation is complicated in regards to my notification to HR of my intent to transition on the job. Without trying to go into a major discourse I am a career US Government employee with over 25 years service at a VA Medical Center. While you would think the Gov't would have a handle on this and especially at a Hospital the reverse seems to be true. The Gov't is a very fragmented entity where there are many Agency's and and even within one Department they do not always follow the same set of Standard Operating Procedures.

And while I know of at least one prior transitioner at my location, the personnel that handled that case and the transitioner are both no longer there and no procedures seem have been in place.  I have been using my Employee Assistance Officer as a go between to the HR Manager but HR has yet to respond to our request of two weeks ago. I should find out more Wednesday when I return to work.

This is my last step I need to take prior to my name change and would really like to have this done before the end of the year. Jessica I hope things go well for you and Jay, congratulations on your progress.   :)

So, I've given my info to my boss.  No biggie.  I haven't heard from her about any of it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.  We aren't at a point of telling HR yet, probably not till the end of the year.
The HRC has some good pdf, glossy-style type stuff.  There's some political agenda in the literature, but all in all, still pretty informative.
I had a ton of trouble getting on Susan's the last few weeks, so had to make do without the wiki.  >:(
