I don't have a TV and thus am not a regular watcher of Countdown, but I did see Keith Olbermann's Special Comment online last night. It was among the most moving things I've heard this entire week since Prop 8 was passed and it gives me hope that someday, hopefully sooner than later, we'll achieve our rights.

I've been thinking a lot about our struggle for equality this past week, and thinking about what it will take to achieve our goals of full equality. I've always been annoyed by the fact that an oppressed minority has rarely gotten their rights until people who weren't members of that minority joined the struggle. But, if that's what it takes, then we need the majority to join us as allies. Right away!

Quote"what it to you."

That is true of so very much "social legislation" and the subject of many a referendum.

What is it to you if black, Hispanic, LTBG, female, male, what-have-you folks get treated with decency and respect and a sense that they are human as well and deserving of legal protections and the same damned perks as you are?

We make a lot of noise about them when they attempt to gain that respect as though it would somehow change us all into Cardassians or Klingons or some sort of inveterate ne'er-do-wells who would merely sit in the ashes and await the disintegration of society and value.

Goddess! What the heck does it matter? They gonna take those rights and that respect and ability to live lives like others and take away mine, or yours or someone else's? May we just be a tad bit reasonable, or are we always going to be driven by insanity, blind rage and ignorance?

I hope to Mother it's not the latter, but some folks give me little reason to hope for any better than that: they show forth ignorance and hatred as though those were some celestial merit-badges that will allow them all free-passes into a xtian heaven or the rulership of the country, the Universe, for eternity.

What blissful and despicably inchoate moronic lack of sense and heart!

Keith put a finger on something very elusive: good sense and empathy and care at no cost to anyone, unless it's withheld. Then, I think, the cost is paid by the heartless and ignorant savages who parade around as though they are the quintessential wisdom made manifest.

Keith was rather quiet in his comment. The quietness of a wisdom the shouters and ranters never seem able to touch.

Well he's a fairly smart guy and some of the people on the other side would seem hard pressed to qualify for the Special Olympics.

Kieth yells a lot too. That's why I stopped watching him.

But he's a good person and respects people.

The one thing we are kind of overlooking is that the revolution is no longer taking place in magazines like 'the advocate' or those 'bay window' papers.  It's all over. Internet, TV, mainstream papers and mags. This is something we all should be grateful for. The more we and our causes become integrated into the mainstream media, the more difficult it is to deny that we're just freaks or fetishists. It also gives us the kind of visibility that makes it more difficult for them to kick us around.

Though, there's a ways to go.  We shall overcome.

Yes, he does yell a lot. But this time he didn't, he didn't need to. And the comment for that reason alone was able to get through.

I've noticed that when shouting and yelling breaks out that the easiest way to be heard it to speak quietly. As people notice they stop shouting and strain to hear. Soon enough the entire room is quiet enough to hear a whisper. Wisdom seems to follow that pathway.

Nichole,

Last night at our local protest, there was only one gay couple.  All of the others were married couples, teenagers, and children.  I was an oddball although no one knows about my history yet.  This time, on this one, we are gaining support based on equal rights, not on the issue of being gay or straight.

Oh... and for what it is worth, here is the link to Olbermann's message about Prop 8.  It is one of his best editorials and literaly brought me to tears:

Cindi, you guys are simply The Best. :) You really should know that.

I've watched the Olbermann video about 10 times in the past 48 hours and it always makes me cry.

This piece, the one about the Olbermann Comment by Zythyra was cross-posted today at Bilerico.

http://www.bilerico.com/2008/11/keith_olbermanns_message.php

Even if you've read it here it might be a nice thing to do just to click on the link and show Bilerico that a Susan's staff member's writings are appreciated and get some views for their site.

Congratulations, Z, on the cross-posting. Your work deserved it.
