So, this pic shows me with hair after about 1 year without a haircut, about 12 years ago.


I'm bald now, after about 7 months without a haircut, because my hair wasn't quite long enough for me to style the way I wanted. I shaved it off to better accomdate a wig.

So now, I'm several months away from having style-able length hair again.

My fellow CDs, which do you prefer: using wigs or your own hair? What tips can you offer?

Does the dude in the picture have any Jerry Garcia tickets? 

I loved it when my hair was long.  In terms of doing things with it.  However, if your not using it that way every day, its a bit - OK more than a bit - of a hassle.

So I have two wigs, and I like them (human hair, BTW) its much easier to style hair when its on the desk in front of you then on your head.  The trick is to get them to look natural, which I think starts with natural hair.

I'd been leaning towards the 2-wig thing myself, thinking I'd just keep my hair a buzz-cut. I found a site that has good-looking wigs that can include streaks of grey, which I need these days.

I like my own hair. That isn't always practical though, it depends on where you are in your dressing? I used wigs years ago when I crossdressed once or twice a month. Once I started dressing more often I grew my hair. As a small kid I went to the salon a few times with my mom and I loved seeing the women in their dresses and heels getting their hair done. Now I get to sit there in cute heels while my hair is getting done. The girl always tries new styles on me and even waxes my brows. I love looking in the mirror and catching women looking at my high heeled feet and painted toes while I'm sitting there.

The other thing is I live in the southeast. Its hot and humid here. Most of the year is to hot and sticky for a wig.

Well at the beginning I used wigs mostly as I needed to appear in male mode most of the time and wigs was the answer. If you want to use a wig it pays to go for the extra money for human hair.

Now my own hair is almost down to my waist and straight and when I want to change the style a little I'll clip on some bangs or some extra clip on peices for that different look. For me having my own hair works for me, but I still love changing my looks (color/length) in a matter of minutes that could only be achieved with a wig.

I have never used wigs and I can not compare the two cases. But, I love my long hairs. Psychologically, genuine hairs would be better. A problem is that I should invest about 1 hour to rinse and dry my hair every morning. Hair salon women recommend not to use hot water and hair-dryers, and I follow it. Even most women do not invest time and follow the direcions like me. Every 6 months, I should treat my hairs by sitting in hair salon for about 4 hours. It is boring.

I use a hair system for Hair Direct.  It is a little expensive, but I can do the attachment myself and I don't need to go to a salon to have them do it.

I can wear my system for 2 weeks without any worries.  24/7.  I do shave my head every couple of weeks, so the system is attached to my scalp. And I can sleep in it, style it anything thay you would do with your own hair.

For transexuals who r full time own hair is the best option and for crossdresser and those who r not full time wig r the option.....

Only if you have hair to begin with. 
i would love to have my own hair but the hair faerie wasn't kind to me.  I am one of those women who are doomed to Male pattern balding.  And hair plugs are not cheap.

There's nothing like having your own wonderful long hair to style and show off, but that's not always possible. I've always been a bit of a hair buff anyway, so I've had my own hair in many lengths and styles. I also have a collection of wigs, which I use more and more due to thinning on top. Absolutely go to a wig stylist to get it thinned and styled to suit your features. This is the difference between a wig that looks "wiggy" and one people can't tell. I'm thinking of trying an integration wig-- one with large openings you can pull your own hair through for a fuller look. Janet Lynn's 24/7 system sounds appealing, but I'd be reluctant to shave my head except as a last resort.

My system is called full cap and it requerts the entire head be shaved.  If you are thinning on top, there are toppers that you can get, but it stills requires having were the tape/adhesive is placed to get the best hold possible  And most of their customers, both men and women shave.

But it has been awesome to hair again.

I like real hair for myself...it just seems better to me, although I have to find some inventive ways to do it to cover bad spots

Ive had long hair since I was first allowed to grow it out in middle school. I love my hair even in male mode and biological females are often jealous of it.
