In order to protect his family during the Cold War, Calvin builds the most complex and innovative fall-out shelter anyone has ever seen. The shelter has enough supplies to keep a family of three alive and well for thirty years (the half-life of nuclear materials). On the night John F. Kennedy addresses the nation with bad tidings about the state of the nation, Calvin decides it would be wise to retreat to the shelter just in case things go south in a hurry.
As his pregnant wife descends into the shelter, a plane crashes in the family's back yard. Fearing the worst, Calvin activates the locks to the shelter at almost the same time his wife goes into labor. Their child, Adam, spends the first 30 years of his life in the shelter with his parents. The morning after Adam's 30th birthday, the locks to the world above ground crank open.
Calvin goes up first, where he learns the world hasn't been destroyed, and where he is propositioned by a transsexual.
