more power to you if you can, just make sure you know all the laws of where you're moving to so you don't end up twice as screwed.

Tragically, or not, its a lot harder to 'just disappear' then it used to be say fifty years ago or more.  Far too much tracking, far too easy to get that information if you really want it.

And people can and do do it all the time.  I doubt that more than a fraction of the TG people who live in the Bay Area grew up here.

That's what I did in 1974 and it worked out fine.

It takes a certain amount of courage though to walk away from everything you have ever known and venture off into the big strange world.

There is phrase the Steven Ambrose uses when talking about Lewis and Clark when he says "at that point they stepped off the map and into the unknown."  Always liked that idea of stepping off the map, moving into the void.

I would however offer this caution.  If your moving to move up, to get what you want, to become who you are, you have a high chance of success.  If you are moving to run away from stuff, you will have a high degree of failure.  Like the old zen saying, 'where ever you go, there you are' it might help you to become yourself around a new bunch of people, in a new place, but its still going to be you trying to do it.

I disappeared from everyone after I got out of the army for about 5 years.  No contact with anyone.  It wasn't the best time of my life and I had many close calls with problem situations because of how I felt about myself.  Now, after telling close family about myself, if I end up without them I can at least say I was the one that tried to be there.  Like tekla said, it probably depend on the why of the situation.  At the time I sure was trying to escape and that did me no good because how the hell can I get away from myself.
