Hey,

I already I know that when on spiro you must make sure you don't consume a lot of potassium.

But according to my understanding, by how much exactly?

I mean, their are fruits and vegetables which contain potassium and those foods are needed to maintain good health.

So the question, have you guys just stopped eating bananas, potatoes, and high potassium foods?

or simply just limited the amount and watched yourself carefully?

You should ask your endocrinologist to make sure that there aren't any problems particular to your blood chemistry. But mine just said not to take any potassium supplements (like you might find in multi-vitamins); there's no reason to change unless you start getting high levels. So don't guess; keep up with your regular checkups and blood work.

I actually just contacted a doctor about this, (I wanted my Endo, but he is out of town till next week).  I was told that even while taking spiro, that I would need to consume a lot of potassium rich foods or drinks to bring it to a dangerous level.  Also, don't take supplements with potassium.

I was worried because I drink a lot of V8, and it is pretty high in Potassium.  They told me I would need to drink like 8 bottles a day, or something ridiculous like that.

Just my insight.

Judge by your heart rate. If it drops too low, cut back right away.

the actual concern is not in one dose as no-one is ever going to do that but the accumilated effect of potassium build-up.

you do not clear it like you used to and there lies the issue

As the others have also said, only regular check-ups and bloodwork will tell you how much potassium is okay. We are all different.

Personally i gave it all up.

my blood test came back slightly elevated but my Endo was not concerned about it he said it was normal with taking Spiro along with my heart meds. I just watch that i don't eat too much and too often foods high in potassium.

slight to no risk of this ever being  a real problem in all honesty.  It's an overexagerated concern for people taking it.

I ate whatever I wanted -- even bananas! And I never had any issues. My doctor checked my potassium levels all of the time, and they were in normal range. *shrugs*

If you eat a healthy, balanced diet, you should be okay. I agree that you probably don't want to be taking a potassium supplement, as that might cause something to happen.

You may want to ask your doctor about it, as your own body, health and the dose of spiro might come into play.

I'm pretty active, and when I just started taking Spiro, I used to get horrible cramps in my legs, both while exercising and just at random. Once I cut bananas and avocados out of my diet the problem went away. That said, I'm vegan and my diet has very little refined food in it, so that might have been what made me susceptible in the first place.
