I'm one of those lifetime dnd players that started in the dark ages of basic dnd.

I've yet to play 4th ed. My group seems to be happy with 3.5, we have only played it for a couple of years. I never used to like dming but then it kind of just grew on me and I really enjoy it. I probably dm a year on year off kind of thing. My campaigns usually wrap up within a year.

My main group also regularly plays rolemaster (classic rules mainly - 2ed?, not standard system) spacemaster (again not standard system). I also had a second little group where we played vampire the masqurade by white wolf. I've dabled in other stuff too.

Recently we got a couple new players that played a lot of games like Neverwinter nights on the pc. They have quite a different mindset coming from the computer games. I find it a bit strange. Maybe I'm becoming a dinosaur.

I'm currently planning a new campaign, I'm not sure if I will use d20 modern or spacemaster yet. I think spacemaster would be good for a break from d20, but I might do a kind of call of cathullu themed horror game, set in the near future post apocalyptic modern world.

It is interesting how rolemaster is known as a game that requires a lot of book keepin. In practise I think it is a much more elegant and leaner system than dnd. Though like dnd you can add a lot of extra fluff.

I've only had the chance to play a few times, but I love it.  I also enjoy painting the D&D miniatures.  Here are a few early ones I did.  Probably wouldn't get me great props on CoolMiniOrNot.com, but I have fun with it.  ;D

I've been playing this game since I was 9, and I've read several novels based on the game, from the DragonLance novels to the Forgotten Realms novels, and even a few of the Greyhawk novels.  It's a game, nothing more, like any other game or hobby, it's only as good or bad as the people playing it.

*pout* My Gnomish Bard gets No love.. None!
Why won't you love my depressed gnomish bard?
He's got great roleplay value and is a wonderful comic relief!

Awww don't worry I'll love your gnomish bard.... sorry for downtrodding the bard... just anyone who has ever played one in any of my games has been a complete and utter RETARD!  However, there was this one guy once, who played an Half-Orcish Bard who's instrument was orcish war drums.... yea he was cool...

See! there are some Brilliant bard players out there. Though most people aren't up to handle such complex characters ;)

I played a human, neutral evil, bard in an old old game.
He played the gong. And all his musical effects were adjusted with house rules. So instead of "inspire courage" they would "demoralize".
And so he'd walk around going:
*Gooooong*... "we're all gonna die".... *goooong*... "your parents don't love you"... *gooong*... "your partner cheats on you while you're out in battle"... *goooong*... "with your elderly father"...
and so on..
He tried to kill himself by going before the Lich king and playing his demoralizing music..
The lich king clapped his hands and went "I LOVE THIS GUY!" and made him undead so he can't die..

obviously that made him more depressed.

Truly D&D characters can become such wonderful works of art.

I had a drow character who, of course, was raised to be evil, but was experimenting with a good lifestyle.  ;) Unfortunately, the group I was playing with disbanded before I had a chance to take this character very far.

My friend decided to play a Drow in one of my campaigns... Sucked for him though because it started in a desert wasteland!  Why does that suck? Well not your normal sand desert, it was a frozen and snow one!  So the entire group is trying to hide in the snow and there's the Drow a human sized black speck on teh landscape bumbling around since he has been blinded by the sun!

Actually, I started with basic D&D, even though 3.5 was out at the time. I didn't know there was another newer than AD&D actually. I found that we had the old red book with the expert book in the basement and I started with that.

You know, every male character I played always ended up getting a "girdle of sex change"? I never could see why that was supposed to be a cursed item.

When I was nineteen and before I knew that transition was even remotely possible, I used to dream of finding this magic item...instead, I stumbled across a ring of three wishes. Never could understand why my compatriots were SO pissed that I, a relative newbie, found that item.

Guess we had different priorities.

So, I've got the pot smoking DM's dilemma- I need to write a new campaign.

4e.  No variant rules except for I've got this thing where if I think the 4e rule is stupid I fall back on 3.5.  I think I'm just gonna like... take Arthurian literature and mix it with Baldur's Gate.

Anyways, mostly I'm posting to say the best thing about 4e is the removal of those godawful gnomes as a playable race (God I hate gnomes,) and then they go and re-integrate them with the Forgotten Realms core book and the PHB2.

*sigh* Gnomes.  Nature's mistake.  Except they don't exist.

Gnomes are always either evil, or deranged sexual predators in any of my campaigns.... I hate Gnomes

Gah, you just like pissing DMs off don't you? LOL Kidding of course!  Onetime, before I made all my Gnomes evil... actually I made them evil because of this.  Anyway, onetime one of my players was playing a Sorcerer  (same game as the Drow), at a tavern in the only city for miles around he asked the Gnome waiter for Chicken.  My friend loves chicken...  due to the fact that it was a frozen wasteland, they had no chicken.  The poor Gnome told the sorcerer this, apologized and offered something he believed would taste the same.  Then, the unexpected happened...
"No chicken?! I'm going to hit him over the head with my staff"
"Well your a sorcerer, so I guess that won't do too much damage.  Alright if your sure, roll!" The sound of a rolling D20 followed.
"20"
"With bonuses right? Let me see that! My god.... alright roll again, everyone... lets pray for the Gnomes safety." Once again the die rolls.
"20"
"Your fu-kin kidding me... roll again!  Dear lord... I'm so sorry Nobby."
"20, that's an instant kill isn't it?"
Deep sigh "Your staff comes down upon the poor gnomes head with a deafening crunch, the gnome, who had been no taller than 3ft, was now less than 1! His limp body slumps to the floor as everyone in the tavern, including your party stare at you in disbelief."
"No, chicken."

He's been hunted by Gnomes in every game since

My old DM had "evil DM's Syndrome" meaning that the night's game wasn't complete 'till he'd chuckled and went "sucks to be you".

I've had a few DMs do that to my party.  The limited times I actually got to play.  However they didn't have the last laugh, as I always found unexpected ways out of the issue. One time they or rather my SO threw a dragon at our party.  Our party being level 1 had no chance to survive so she was expecting us to run.  The dragon was at least an Adult. I ended up talking my way out of the situation, with the proper amount of groveling and I think a party member sacrifice, but no one liked him anyway.

P.S. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in playing D&D over MSN or something like that.  Could be fun.  I know typing takes awhile but anyone who had a mic could feel free to use it!
