If you really want to try to combine D&D with MMO, go for DDO. It's really not too bad, though...it really house rules a lot of stuff.

What edition of D&D do ya'll like anyway? I'm most fond of v3.5 myself.

Played DDO, thing is I don't like paying for things.  I only play WOW since there are private servers.

I love 4th Edition since the combat is a lot more streamlined, the classes are more rounded, and the customization is less limited.  Still I house rule 3.5 stuff a lot when it comes to "skill challenges" as well as general role playing when needed.  So what I generally play is somewhat of a hybrid.

Right now I'm playing with my SO and she hates all the rules, so it's really more of an interactive story/roleplay as there is no die rolls or anything.... it's fun in it's own way but obviously would never work with multiple people.

I've actually done completely "rule-less" roleplaying with friends online that involved 3-5 people and worked well, but I've also seen some of it go really sour in things like Furcadia.

I've yet to try 4e. I wouldn't mind giving it a try, though I'm a bit hesitant because a lot of the changes don't sit real well with me. I don't mind the step away from Vancian magic (cast and forget), but I hate how they nerfed critical hits and whatnot.

The main v3.5 game I ever run is a custom setting of my own, which has custom mage classes in place of the wiz/sorc/druid/cleric classes and also steps away from Vancian magic. I do prefer to be a player rather than a DM, though. ^_^; My roommate was running a v3.5 Dark Sun game for me, a friend, and my [ex-]boyfriend, but that stopped when I dumped him. ; ;

Crits are actually easier to obtain with 4E. Before you would have to roll a natural 20 (or your threat range) then roll again, and your second roll would need to be high enough to hit, then you would roll a third time (if you got another Natural 20) and if that was high enough to hit it was an instant kill.

In 4th, as soon as you roll a natural 20 (or your threat) if you total after modifiers are enough to hit, then it's automatically a crit.  Of course the lack of double damage (ie. Crit means Maximum possible damage not double damage) sucks on the players part, it also helps the player as that means Monsters can't do double damage to you either.  Also if your total damage is more than half an enemy's total HP, the enemy has to make an endurance check equal or greater than your damage, otherwise they die automatically.

Furthermore, healing surges help so MUCH!

Crits aren't supposed to be *easy* to obtain. They're supposed to be very powerful hits.

And some weapons do crit easier in 3e/v3.5...rapiers crit on an 18-20. Most swords crit on 19-20.

Not to mention the weapons that, though they only crit on a natural 20 (without keen or improved crit, anyway), they do even heavier damage like Gaxes doing x3 or Scythes doing x4.

3e/v3.5 do crits a helluva lot better than 4e does. So what if the players have a bit easier time getting killed. That's part of the game. I don't want my game to be on "easy" mode. =\

Well once again, that's the wonder of DMing. The rules are more like... guidelines than actual rules!  Unless your playing at the RPGA whatever the DM says goes. So like I said before, I prefer playing a 3.5 4e hybrid

I don't suppose that there are any fans of the GURPS system here ? Or for that matter anything but D&D ? I don't mind DnD mind you, but I can't help but think there is something better for how I like to play out there. Easily introduce crosscampaign elements -- be they psionic powers or high technology in a fantasy campaign or magic in a high technology space setting for instance. -- with GURPS, such things can be done with ease and are basically expected. But, is there anything else?

As for how to 'do it', I think IM has worked "ok" so far but I am inclined to say that it is far from optimal. Perhaps a forum setting would work, but I do not know. (The Forum RPs I have been a part of have been very free form and basically rule-less, fwiw.)

Me and hubby are currently in love with the Burning Wheel system.

I presonally have no clue about the GURPS system. I've previously played Robotech the RPG.  Mostly though just DnD as that seems to be all anyone I know is interested, due to a shift in work hours I missed out playing a Star Wars RPG back in Orillia :(

The thing about D&D is that the system itself is the d20 system and there's things like d20 Modern for easily adding in things that are not purely fantasy or default "D&D" even in D&D settings. Also Star Wars D20 and a few others, plus just the general adaptability of d20 rules. D&D also has Psionic Powers (an entire book devoted to it in v3.5, the Expanded Psionics Handbook, which I have somewhere~). I love my Thri-Kreen Psychic Warrior in the Dark Sun game my roommate was running.

I thought GURPs used d20 rules also, but I don't remember. I'm not very familiar with GURPs myself, but my roommate is.

There's also White Wolf's setting and d10 system, but I'm very unfamiliar with it (though I'm helping my roommate set up a Vampire: The Masquerade game with some friends of ours).
