It really depends on the person. I've had SRS and I'd like FFS, although I don't have problems "blending in" I wouldn't mind it. I'm very glad I've had SRS and for me it was very important and very life changing. I think it has been more life changing, for me, than FFS would have been if I had it first.
I was also very lucky that SRS was covered by my provincial health care plan at the time (it no longer is). Other wise, it would have been a very long time before I got anywhere 'cause I'm just on disability right now. Disability isn't a lot. I've stopped smoking, saving me $2500 per year, and I've been cutting what costs I can. On disability alone, hopefully I can save $5000 a year (about $415 a month). That makes things very tight. If I spent 50,000 on FFS, it would take me about 10 years to get there. Who knows what 10 years brings. And who knows what happens in those 10 years.
For me, even if SRS wasn't covered I'd go for SRS first because it's cheaper and something that I could afford in 3-4 years with saving what I could. I also knew that I'd feel complete. And I don't need to look like a model to feel complete, and I don't need the world to tell me I'm a woman to know that I'm a woman.
Everyone is different, and it all depends on personal perspective, situations, and where they are in life.
