I'm wondering because I wanna be a highschool teacher, and already have my BA and just need my BEd, but I'm honestly terrified.  Every day I wanna come out of the closet more and more, but I'm afraid that if I do that I won't be able to get a job teaching for discrimination.  You know how people think of people of alternative sexuality (or alternative gender) being around their children, even if it's not true.  I also think that as a teacher I'd definitely have to be stealth with the kids.  I mean teaching's a power game and you have to be the one with the power, but if kids get even one thing over you, especially high school kids, it's game over because they have leverage.  Y'know?

I don't know what it is like in the US but in the UK there are lot's of postop Trans teachers.

Back in the 1980's a very good friend of mine transitioned and had SRS whilst working as a college teacher and then retrained as a primary school teacher. She got on fine, although I have a nasty suspicion that this is one of those things which may have gotten worse since all the recent hysteria over child protection in the UK.

I have known several trans teachers, one post op and one non-op.  BOTH of them were really strongly supported by their principals, but both endured hardships from parents and sometimes other staff.  Both were teachers before they changed to their affirmed gender, and as far as I know both are still teaching.
My advice is to make it as low profile as possible, concentrate on doing your job well, communicate about everything, and act like you deserve to be there, BECAUSE YOU DO.
