Ok, So this may sound stupid but can you change your name on a birth certificate without having to change the gender marker? Because  Im still pre-op but Im getting a legal name change in 2 weeks and I wanted to know if its possible. I live in Kentucky and didn't know if any of you guys could help me out. If so, how does one go about getting their name changed on a Birth Certificate?

I'm guessing you call (or in person if you're nearby) central office and have them mail you the forum to change your BC. (submitted with a certified copy of court order for name change)

In Oregon all it takes is a court ordered name change and about $40.  I know because I did it.  Now I just have to get the paperwork to change the gender marker.  Another $140 for the court order and $40 for the B/C.

Hmm, well I contacted the office I was supposed to so I'm just waiting on either a response from them or when I go to get it changed. We'll see I suppose lol.

Yes, you can change just the name on a birth certificate.
Still, as it costs money and a minor bit of effort, you might want to wait until you can change gender at the same time.
A birth certificate is not used for much usually. A passport is more recognized.

Yes, I agree with this. No point in paying to have the same thing changed twice. I don't think BC need to be shown much anymore for ID (except for passports). Usually people go off your SSN now which doesn't have the gender on the card.

Unless of course you're in an area where changing a gender marker requires HRT, top surgery and a hysto - but changing a name to gets approved on the spot .

Yep. The state I was born in requires that before changing the gender on your BC. I'm thinking though that not many people will need to see my BC, where as a DL and SS card will have the new name. I'm not sure what I'll do about the BC, but that's down the road.

Im in the process of legally changing my name.

In Cali....in order to get your name change...i would have to send the Decree Changing Name form approved by the judge, to Sacramento.The local places,where you can get a copy of your birth certificate, cannot change the name.Changing the gender marker is not required.

In Cali,we are allowed to changed the gender marker on our CA/Drivers license, as long we have a doctor/psych signature...but of course the state wouldn't recognise the gender legally unless you are taking hormones & surgery. 

Thanks everyone for their input and info. I think I'll just wait on all of that until i can get the gender marker changed as well.

I went with name before gender marker - but that's because I needed to change the name on my birth certificate in order to change it on my DL and other "official paperwork" (ie, everything).

It all depends on how liberal your area is with "known as" names. In my area you need 3 forms of ID copied and notorized in triplicate, an iris scan, a credit history, a stat deck and a rectal probe to get approval for a can of soda! 

... but the soda is cheap, it's delivered fast, nobody questions you indepth to see if you're really thirsty, you don't have to drink it in front of a judge, and you don't have to report in the paper what flavour it was... so it's not all bad! .

In my situation, it was very much worth the hassle to change legal name without changing gender marker. I wouldn't have saved money waiting, but even if I could have I would have done it this way regardless. It's worth the money twice over to buy a few years of living with the name I really like, and not being ashamed of my paperwork.
