Dr. Oz Tackles Transgender Children

The Dr. Oz Show Thursday will air "one of the best 15-minute segments on transgender children to ever appear on national television," the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation announced on its blog Tuesday.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, who rose to fame as a regular medical correspondent on Oprah, talked with two transgender teens and their families about their experiences growing up and their parents' decision to support them.

Sounds painful.  Touch football would probably have been a better choice if playing against children.

I'm  glad for the show being aired, but it was given too little time to cover the topic properly. ( I guess they needed to save most of the showtime to cover a mom who over indulges her family with pasta) ??? I was surprised that given Dr. Oz's research and coverage on other topics, he seemed in the dark almost completely about the trans issues in kids. Maybe he was playing the game of looking ignorant in order to have the audience better identify with him. I think Opray has done the same thing. I also felt offended that he started the segment with a warning to parents about upcoming "controversial, sensitive topic which could be disturbing to people". Moments later you see this adorable 10 year old girl on stage with her mom. Boy that's scary!

All of this said, the most telling thing that I heard and took away was Josie's mother saying that the docs had misdiagnosed her daughter and while trying to get 'him' to accept 'his' male identity, Josie was pumped up with as many as 14-17 drugs to deal with her 'problems'. She was seen by docs as maybe having been OCD, depressed, ADD or any number of other incorrect diagnosis. As soon as they let Josie be Josie, a little girl, she was again normal, happy and healthy. Just look at her infectious smile, and you know she was right.

The health care providers need to listen to the kids who know themselves best. "Just let your children be themselves, and they will grow up healthy", said Josie's mother. Run from doctors who know little about GID who prescribe a battery of drugs to dope up your kids!

When will the medical community get the proper education on GI (gender incongruence) such that they can not make such alarming mistakes?

Now that Youtube has killed the video, if anyone needs it, I've uploaded this episode here:

It's edited and only includes the segment on the transgender kids.

After unzipping it, if you have difficulty playing the Xvid-encoded AVI, you may need to update your system's media player, or just install a compatible one (such as the free VLC Media Player).

Happy viewing,
Josie

Edit: Added mediashare mirror.

Josie.

Thank you so much for making that video available. I really enjoyed it.

Two young kids, being who they are. The utter joy on the face of that little girl is enough reason in itself to watch it. The boy is turning into a very hansum young man.

In both cases, parents behaving as good parents should.

It gives hope for the future that increasing numbers of children will no longer need to hide who they are or be ashamed for what they are.

I've just finished watching the video and seeing Josie smile made me cry.. Why? Because I now know that smile and wish I'd known what I felt at her age and been able to articulate it.. Knowing that kids, at least some of them, get the option to live as they are is fantastic..

And yes, Spacial, Isaac is a very handsome young man..
