hi everyone ...

so lately i have been seriously thinking about getting a orchi done.  i was wondering if anyone knew of any good doctors to perform this around the chicago area? also im looking to eventually get srs but unfortunately at this time im not able to afford the entire cost so that will be in the future.  also about how much is an orchi??  do you lose your sex drive completly?  my fiance is terrified of this lol but i really want to get this done.  i have been on hormones and spiro for 6 months but feel with an orchi i would get much better results...

thanks for any info.

I am going to have an orci soon with Dr Bowers. I have done quite a bit of research and it is right for me. You will have to see if it is right for you. If you have one you should be able to have social security as well as you drivers licence changed to female if the orci letter is correctly worded (irreversible genital surgery). I am told it will help with transition as it will end the T poison and will not affect SRS.

I got mine from Dr. Nguyen in Oregon.  And his letter was used to change the marker with the SSA.

you'll probably have to scout out local urological surgeon who will want a letter of recommendation from a therapist to cover their legal butt. (I had and still have the option to get an orchi at university of mn, he wanted a letter from my therapist even though I had a medical reason)

thanks for your replies.  Im going to talk to my dr on my next appointment to get refferals.  As for having your gender marker changed i just changed my name last week and with a note from my dr i was able to change my gender on my DL.  So if an orchi was perfomed SSA would be changed?  what if the letter was worded properly would a birth certificate be able to be changed?  Im asking because I plan on getting married and would imagine it needs to be changed in order to be legal?? am i right in assuming this?
Thanks again.

I had mine done by a urologist at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago.  She required a letter and also discussed my case with my primary physician who is part of the Howard Brown Clinic.

It was done in a full operating theatre so the costs were high, over $10k.  My insurance did cover it though.

I have documented the episode here:

Please feel free to PM me if you have questions.

When I got my letter from my surgeon, he included the all important "irreversible genital surgery".  This was accepted by the SSA to change my marker to female.  I have yet to try the birth certificate, here in Oregon.

I imagine that if the b/c and the SSA says female that you can get married.

While you can dance around the rules in getting your gender marker changed.  Changing your birth certificate in IL is very precise and requires specific forms to be filled out by you and your surgeon indicating not only irreversible surgery, but also specific gender reassignment surgery.  Again, check out my blog here for my own experiences with both the SSA and the DMV in IL.  Usually the SSA won't change you gender marker without a surgeons letter but presentation can count for quite a bit.

Also check out ther WIKI here for more information.

i live in chicago however i was born in Minnesota.  im not extremely familiar with the rules about that state.  i would imagine its much more difficult to change the gender.  im going to the SSA to change my name though today or tom. i doubt i will be able to get the gender changed as i only have a letter from my dr about being trans that i used for the dmv.

Sandy I read your blog about the orchi where do i find your blogs about ssa and dmv though?

Thanks

I was born in PA and they will change my birth certificate based on a Dr's letter saying I had irreversible genital surgery. Dr Bowers letter says just that and adds that you are now female. An orci is irreversible genital surgery. Most states should accept this letter but some may not. Some may want a statement that you have a vagina or words to that effect. The good news is an orci should allow you to change your gender marker on your DL and SS record and these are the most important. Look at it this way, two down and one to go and female clothing will fit much better without those tumors. I am still checking on passports but some people have reported positive results.

I understand dl being important in saying the female gender... but im confused why ssa would be more important then changing your birth certificate.  im trying to get my passport changed which i would imagine needs a birth certificate change first so that i can start applying to airlilnes again --i used to be a flight attendant but was let go due to transition things.

Getting a job is annoying when there is an ID mismatch between identification and what the SSA has in the database. (as part of I-9 verification)
