I woke up during a back surgery...was the worst experience of my life.  I was face down on the surgical table I presume and couldn't move or speak or anything.  There was just this horrifying pain in my spine and a terrible vibration (I assume they were removing bone at the time but I'm not sure) and my body began to shake violently.  I could hear the people in the operating room yelling to hold me down and shoot morphine but, as I found out, I'm immune to it.  A females voice said she had given as much morphine as she could and then a male voice said to shoot demerol and then I was out again.

It was so traumatic that I never even mentioned it to anyone until about a year later.  I never even brought it up with the doctor..I assume he figured I wouldn't remember it because he never brought it up either.  He died a few years later and all my medical records from that surgery disappeared too.  So now I specifically request to be monitored during surgery.  I don't leave it up the discretion of the surgeon or the anesthesiologist.  My last back surgery had no complications and the doctor said the monitor results were perfectly normal.  I can only guess that the anesthesiologist screwed up during the first surgery.

I'm sorry to hear of your experience, it must of been terribly horrific to go through.

It's odd how your records had disappeared and you are right, I don't think anyone but the anesthesiologist is to blame.

Yeah my friend said she couldn't move at all but she felt the pain. That's horrible about your back surgery.

On April 8Th I booked the date for my surgery. Susan said she would send me a conformation e-mail. I'm still waiting to receive it. Can anyone tell me how long it to to get theirs, or when i might expect to receive it?

Hi Jess, when I spoke to Montreal a few weeks ago to confirm the date for my surgery, Brigette said she was coming up to the month of September for confirmation letters.  I called because I still had not yet received mine.  I'm guessing they try to get them out at least three months prior to your date.

Thanks Kristyn, Thing is i was wanting to book my flight plans as far in advance as possible, guess it would be fine to go ahead with that.

But then there's the deposit thing where they say that its 2000$ twenty one days after your confirmation letter. 2500$ eight weeks before, and the balance one month before. Trying to not be impatient. When did you book your surgery and have you made you travel arrangements yet?

I booked mine in January.  As far as travel, I'm only about an hours flying time from Montreal.  I'm in Toronto, so it's basically climb, cruise for about 25 minutes then descent.  We have a downtown airport with daily flights to and from Montreal, so booking is relatively easy--maybe a week or two in advance just to be safe.  I've known some who've booked a day in advance to fly there from here.

I wouldn't worry about booking too early, maybe a month or two in advance

I have to connect in Toronto, too bad we weren't leaving at the same time. We could of sat beside each other on the plane. I am 1:20 from Toronto then 25-30mins to Montreal.

from what I see there are 3 departures to montreal direct, and 3 return flights, all same price, all on the same crappy regional jet http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Continental_Airlines/Continental_Airlines_Embraer_ERJ-145.php

plenty of open seats on all of them (9+)

Jet? More like a bus with wings. From what i see there's only one morning flight that day and just 24 available seats.

My surgery is scheduled for a Tues and ill be arriving on a Sunday, so i thought it would be best to get there earlier in the day. I might be best off to actually book it soon.

Usually, when I fly, I take whatever isle seat available.  Then at check-in, I always ask for available bulkhead seating.  These are the seats right up front and are usually reserved for people with special needs.  9 out of 10 times they are available

I woke up during a back surgery...

I have a friend who woke up just for a split second when she was being transferred from the operating table to the guerney after her SRS, she remembers screaming, and then going immediately back under. Maybe it was the stimulation from lifting her, I don't know.

Now, this person has an aversion to anesthesia, and requested the lightest cleanest type she could get during her preop consultation, so I don't think anyone else should worry about it. I'm not as I am fine with being put under as much as necessary.

Any surgery can vary depending on the person + anaesthesiologist(big word) Often times you are given an Epidural + Sedative should the sedative wear out you shouldn't feel anything. A lot of people had waken up near the end of surgery being shaking but can't feel anything.

I went through Breast Augmentation with a sedative, doc said count 10 to 1 I was counting 10 9 8... felt like i blinked and wanted to continue counting 7 6 5 but it tripped me out I was in a different room (recovery) So I made it through the entire sedative which is the norm for most people.

And to some who have no effect on sedatives, they put out on the mask.. if all fails... the epidural is the ONLY solution and you are stuck waiting being shaking and hearing everything that's going on.

How long was the procedure?

Oh, come on!  They're not going to leave you awake! :o

It as happened before, they kept the person awake with just an epidural block.
