I went and had a social life today-- Eight and a half hours worth of social life! (Just sitting and hanging out with a buddy who I've been hoping to get to know better. Having now acheived that goal, I have concluded that he is every bit as awesome as I presumed him to be.)

I'm one week away from my big hippie roundup there in the Sierra mountains, and my mini is that I've got all my camping gear, clothing and tools packed and ready to go.

Oh plenty of pics, I'm our unofficial official photographer.

And I'll be up there for a week, 3 days (and into the nights) of set-up, 3 days and nights of music (we'll have 4 stages, and there will be live music about 15 hours a day), and one day to tear it all down and pack it away.

The little town itself is an old mining camp just a bit north of Yosemite made famous by Mark Twain for his story of the miners having a contest to jump frogs called The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.  Hence the frog on the poster, and the site is the fairgrounds where they still hold that frog jumping contest every year.

The town is like walking into a museum.

Yeah well the motto for our production group is "First In, Last Out." And we were chosen by the Dead organization itself to be the production team for this because most of us remember what it was like back in the day BJD (Before Jerry Died) when we could hold these three day fests were people could show up at the beginning, park their car, pitch the tent and not leave until it the band was all packed and gone.  So we're going to try to pull it off one more time with some more recent modifications.  So were going to give in a bit to the rave scene and have an all-night dance tent (for some reason a lot of people have trouble sleeping at these things, something in the water? LOL) and because the all night jam session of people endlessly playing Sugar Magnolia (poorly) kept what few people who wanted/needed to sleep awake, we're setting up a special stage so that those people can have a place to play away from the camping.  (my idea by the way - and don't worry I'm being punished for that, as I'm going to be the stage manager for that bit of all night cat herding).

Now I'm pretty sure that somewhere in the middle of this, when Bobby and Phil et.all. are playing Workingman's Dead and American Beauty back to back to celebrate/commemorate their release some 40 years ago (god I'm getting old) and I'm standing there on the side of the stage with a huge spliff doing the puff, puff, pass deal its going to be one of the greatest moments in my show biz career, and outside of the birth of my kids, perhaps one of the great events in my life.  But just packing made me all happy.

I took the kids to parliament and also round the new offices in Portcullis house - it was interesting and exciting - got to see lots of portraits of mps and make silly jokes and also did some mp spotting - kids very much liked seeing me being pat searched by police as well.

I've recently been assuaging my boredom by chatting on Omegle. Of course, it's always hilarious when someone asks is the infamous "asl" question and then doesn't know what to make of you when you stick "genderless being" in between your age and location. However, it is more rewarding by far when you finish a 3-hour conversation with someone and say "Hey, it's been nice talking to you!" to which they respond, "And you sir/ma'am," and you realize you just had a perfectly intelligent conversation without ever having to know each other's genders.

...next time I get asked "asl," though, I think I may have to inform them that I only know a little bit of American Sign Language, and that it doesn't work well through a computer screen.

I figured out an ending for the book I'm plotting.

I'm still having fun with Omegle.

I discovered a commonly-used alternative to "asl" that is even more fun to respond to:

Stranger: m or f?
Me: Actually, my favorite letter is q!
Stranger: wat?
Me: It spells so many lovely words! Quizzical queer quip. Plus, it always has it's best friend u as a sidekick!

I went to the Frederick McCubbin exhibition at the local gallery, and found that if you look at an oil painting from an angle, rather than straight on, you can see the depth in it a lot more.  Inspired to give painting another go! 8)
