Schala

It's a synthetic progestin, Provera is a brand of it. It may have masculinizing effects, be careful. It's also not as effective as bio-identical progesterone.

I took it for 2 months in 2007, then switched to Prometrium (decided to), a bio-identical brand. Although my insurance covers Provera and I have to pay 100% of Prometrium.

Positive effects should include full maturation of breasts...that's sort of why I asked to get some progesterone in the first place. But results may vary. It's inefficient on its own (needs estrogen), but required for full development. Androcur has a progestatic effect in itself, too.

Males and Females produce progesterone in equal number, except
in the fertile female phase where the progesterone levels shoot up
tremendously.

Provera is a progestin, is not the ideal, but not the worst of the progestins
(the worst are those used in birth control pills). Duphaston is a
better progestin; it has virtually no side effects. Yet,
myself, I tolerated provera very well
while others don't. Its used to mature the breasts, make it rounder and
fuller. The chance of masculinasing side effects are very slight; the
most prevalent side effect is on mood. If your mood is altered (feel depressed for example) in any way when you start taking it, stop.

If you can, tell your Endo to switch you to a bio identical progesterone,
whatever the brand. But, if you tolerate provera, it can be ok too.

Medroxprogesterone is kind of poor.  There is no real benefit to it.  You should really question why he put you on it instead of micronized progesterone. The side effects of Medro are pretty bad, and the fact he even gave you a script kind of shows you he is out of date with current thinking on HRT.   Natural (micronized) progesterone is significantly preferable to progestin, especially what he wrote a script for.

The reason doctors push the synthetic drugs is because they are patented by drug companies and the doctors act as unknowing marketing tools, they are told that synthetic is better when really it's not, it's just the way they were educated.... educated by a vested interest.
Synthetic are not bad bad they are just linked closer to side effects which is also why some doctors don't prescribe P at all. Because all the studies are done while using synthetic. Drug companies can't patent something that is natural (or should I say bio-identical). By altering it they can patent it.

The difference between two common progestins provera and duphaston is that provera can have an androgen effect if you are mega dosing. It doesn't have a huge noticeable effect other than a more active libido.
Duphaston can not convert to T and has less side effects, it's generally the preferred between the two.
Everyone is different as we all know by now so some can handle provera and swear by it's results, while others have had bad reactions to it and will tell you to say away from it.

In australia duphaston is the only progestogen that is covered for rebate. We can't even get prometrium, which is the most popular bio-identical progesterone.. I was quite upset when I found this out. I can't afford to import right now.
My endo repeatedly told me that because I was on androcur then I don't need a progestogen and I almost believed him, until I asked my GP for a bloodtest of my P levels that came back mega low!!!! coincidence? Not really I wouldn't be surprised if these so called antiandrogens with a weak progestogen action have zero effect on P levels, if it's such a small amount it would just get destroyed in the gut? *shrugs* I'll just go by my bloodtest results.
so...
most commonly known to be safest of the bio-identical - prometrium
most commonly known to be safest of the synthetic - duphaston
from what I've researched... </subjective opinion>
