Maybe we need a Gender Euphoria board.
LordKAT, I've occasionally encountered older British books in which children are referred to as "it." So a mixed group of girls and boys might be referred to this way: "After every child had opened its gift, Uncle Nigel led in a pony, to the delight of all."
I've read sentences such as these, but mainly in early 20th century books, aimed at children. Enid Blighton, I'm pretty sure, used this device.
It is clumsey English. But tended to be done to emphsise a single group. Another point, to say, Every child opened their gifts, tends to suggest that some or all children had more than one gift. Again, to emphasise that each child has been treated equally.
In this context, it was certainly never intended as derogatory.
To the opening post, it is good to read. You mom sounds like a first class chap, eh what! And your Aunt, well, she's a real brick I say.
May I suggest that, for people serving the public, it might be better if you, or someone with you try to find a way to work your gender into their conversation?
These people don't seek to offend, generally. They are just doing their job.
In any case, any positive reaction is to be encouraged, not just for you, but whoever follows you.
