Adding Progesterone To The HRT Meds

Julie Marie

This week my doctor started me on progesterone.  He said it will further my feminine development.  I don't very often see this medication listed in typical HRT regimens and was wondering if anyone else is taking it.  If so, what changes did you notice?

One thing I'm wondering is if it has anything to do with me feeling horny lately.  Today it's been pretty strong.  Anyone else feel this?

J,

I never liked boys before progesterone. Now I like them A LOT. Enjoy!

Hiee Julie,

I don't know where you are as far as transition goes and HRT. If you are pre-op and taking an anti-androgen such as Spironolactone then the synthetic 'Provera' will be an antagonist to it and reduce its effects slightly.

I tried Provera initially, but had to drop it as I found it made me quite overly sensative after about the 2 or 3rd day taking it. I switched over to 'Promitrium' which is a natural progesterone and not a progesterin. If you go with the micronized progesterone make sure it is in capsule form ie suspended in oil usually peanut oil as the tablet form will be all but destroyed by your digestive acids.

The first few days I started taking the Promitrium my body was quite happy. Now it is just another pill I take and I have changed that to the last 14 days of the cycle.  Have I noticed any stellar effects, I would have to say NO.

Hope this has helped a bit.

Byee,
  Brina

Sorry to say, but no I have not felt that way in ages.

As far as progesterone is concerned, my doctor did not think it was a necessary hormone to achieve feminization since it only appears to help promote breast growth, nothing else.  So I was never prescribed progesterone and I feminized quite well with estrogen alone, I'd say. ;)

I defintely feel that way a bit more often since I started on progesterone, compared to pretty much never beforehand, and I've definitely been paying a lot more attention to men than I would have beforehand as well :).

I've been taking it for just over two months now, and the only other change that I've noticed is that my breast growth did seem to speed up a little bit after being on it for a few weeks, compared to when I was just on estradiol and spironolactone, but not drastically by any degree.

From the research I did and what my endo explained to me...progesterone was commonly thought to be a necessary part of HRT but studies have shown that supplemental progesterone has very minimal effects, if any, on breast growth which is the most common reason it is prescribed for transsexual patients.

Now that being said....it's all subjective.  Some people swear by it, others say it makes little to no difference.  My endo doesn't prescribe it simply because she says it doesn't help much if at all.  If I can get away without another prescription I'm happy :)

Lemme know if you blossom out into a C cup Julie...I'll rethink my decision   ;D

I noticed after starting it my breast growth did accelerate.  I am taking a break from it right now because of the depressive side effects.

While I haven't been on it long enough to see physical changes I have noticed I'm a lot happier now.  I felt I was stagnating, now I feel like I'm moving again.

Well, I got suicidally depressed and I knew why.  I pulled myself out of it, but still felt down a lot.  Almost immediately after stopping it I felt much happier.  It was not psychological, but chemical.  I'm just taking a break for now to regather myself.

I saw my endo about the same issue of increasing/assisting breast growth and FWIW she said the same thing Brandi.  So ya know I'm going to let nature take it's course.  My breasts are "A+" right now and with the right bra they look very attractive and very fondlable (if that's a word) :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I remember, I've read that the synthetics (Provera) are the ones which can cause depression and have the anti-estrogen effects. Supposedly, the non-synthetic versions (Prometrium and Microgest) don't carry the same risks of side effects.

Still, as everyone said, the benefits of either version seem to be very controversial.

To the moderators:  I did not see any dosage information when I read these links.  But you never know, I may have missed one......please feel free to delete the link if you find dosage information.  Thanks.

I asked my doctor about this last night and he said pretty much the same thing.

LostInTime

I have been on prometrium for years and did not have depressive symptoms due to it.  My depression hit due to external factors that are just a part of my not so normal life.

YMMV and all that.
