I have small feet (US Mens 5... and that's after T growth - I used to be a 4) and it's a right pain to buy shoes in the mens section. I have better luck in the boys.
My favorite pair of shoes is my workboots. They came free with my uniform, but I love them so much wear them on my days off, too

. They are a pair of high topped Baxter Thermolites. Very industrial, sturdy, comfortable, and look great (but they are sized HUGE. I needed a 4). Look a little like sci-fi combat boots

.
I think Doc Martins are overrated. I've had mine 14 years, yeah, and they've held up ok... but they're just not that comfortable. And they were overpriced back then...nowerdays they're just ridiculous. Much like Converse chucks, really - you're paying for the style not comfort.
But seriously - just go to the boys section. That's where you find mens shoes in smaller sizes, and it's normally a good bit cheaper. Sure, you feel like pedobear (well, I did) and it's a kick to the ego - but hey - it's not like you're going to be arrested or anything. If anyone gives you weird looks, lift up your pant leg and wiggle your unusually small foot at them
