How much money would be spent to get all the transition done?

A small point......HRT is not free for me on the NHS or for everyone...?

It costs me almost £20 every six weeks or so.....

Though I do know you can pay a one off annual payment up-front....but that's still hundreds of quids...lol

But maybe if you're on a disability allowance, or a pensioner....or one of the other let-orfs....

Doh! I kind of forget that prescriptions have a charge.

Although actually it doesn't cost me that much because a long time back I cunningly got my GP into the habit of prescribing at least a 6 months supply at a time - so I end up paying less than £30 a year, which is so low a cost that I kind of forget it. (I originally sold him the idea that it would save him time, and save me having to come into surgery thereby incurring time and transport costs)

It might be easier to justify because I am on such a low dosage now, but he does do the same for Alison too.

Myself

My FFS cost me about 11,500 USD. (Could have been cheaper if I didn't have it in two operations, but thought I could be happy without the forehead fix)

My Estrofem cost me about 10-11 USD a month.
My Androcur cost me about 21 USD a month (will drop after SRS).

My SRS will either be free or cost me an unknown price if I decide not to do it in Israel for free.

After SRS I will only have Androcur for 21 USD a month.

I doubt I will be having BA. Do wonder about what can be done about the hips though...?

NO!

Sorry by this is really important! After SRS you DO NOT take androcur - that is only taken whilst you have testes and therefore have a source of androgens. Androcur is an androgen blocker.

It is the estrofem that continues after SRS - although at a vastly reduced dosage.

The Androcur ceases immediately. Taking Androcur after your testes have been removed could have serious consequences!

Hi Iceprincess, :)

I think that the costs involved will depend so much on how well hrt goes for you as a lot of the money will be for FFS and BA. As you are young and from what I saw of your picture, blessed with some stunning features, it might not cost as much as someone like Kate. I was a little disturbed by that breakdown as I had decided to wait for the U.K health system to provide my SRS but she does have some very strong views about the British surgeons :o

> My counseling was paid for by insurance.
> My HRT, including monitoring my levels, cost about $200 a year, although less after GRS.  The balance was paid by insurance.  (Incidently, they never balked at providing me hormones while still legally male.)
> I went to a voice coach at the university.  She gave me tips which I have practiced on my own.  She never charged me.  (I'm a good friend of her father-in-law, but I think she would have done it for free anyway.)
> Hair removal will probably cost in the neighborhood of $10K, much of which is because I had a lot of gray in my beard and so needed (and still need) a lot of electrolysis.
> GRS and tracheal shave (done at the same time) cost about $28K, including all expenses (flying my daughter to Trinidad, etc.).
> I doubt that I will get a BA.  I'm already as big as my sister after 17 months HRT.
> I won't get FFS or any of the other stuff.  I'm not young and in competition on the basis of my looks (thank goodness :P), and everyone sees me as a woman already.
> I spent a lot for a new wardrobe and grooming, but that's a highly variable cost.  There's also legal costs to change name and sex, plus incidental costs.

So, my transition probably cost me, in US dollars (not counting emotional costs and all that) between $40,000 and $50,000.  A bargain, for receiving my life in exchange. :)

I was estimating an amount around $85,000USD - $120,000USD but, if you people could help me to get a better approximation, I'd appreciate it.

I think your estimate is on the high end, but it could cost that much depending on the surgeon(s).  I'd say between $75,000 - $100,000.  I don't have any experience with rib cage remodeling though and advise against it (although that may be better as a separate discussion).

Rib removal is a defo a desperate way to go more hour-glass style....

As it involves cutting lower ribs from the spine.....(eeergh no I don;t think so).... and the complication rate is v.bad from what I've read....including breathing pain.... and back problems too....

Ditto there is no realistic hip-widening once your adult skeleton is set....

Which is why getting those girlie hormones in as young as poss sooooo helps....pre sixteen if legally approved....lol

All health care is free in the sense that we don't pay for it directly but we do have one of the largest tax burdens in the world, so in that sense, yes it is free but the system is very slow. I am going private for my hrt at the moment while I'm waiting for the NHS system to catch up. >:(

Dr. Mcginn has all of her prices listed on her website if you're curious on some numbers. http://www.drchristinemcginn.com

These massive numbers seem a bit on the high side honestly...

HRT - $105/mo
$15/mo estradiol
$15/mo spiro
$30/mo prometrium
$45/mo evamist

Hair Removal - Laser
$2100 - 8 sessions + free touch ups forever

GRS w/Mcginn
$17500

Basically for me its $19600+$1200/year with my current meds... For the basic package...
I've never heard of BA or rib removal going over 10k ea...

If you add approx 20k for subsequent surgery it still takes a long time to reach 85k..

Anyways, being young I'd wait till you have some time on hormones (at least a year) before making decisions on major plastic surgery.

The above ticker is meant as a joke! Laugh! Everyone knows the real zombie apocalypse isn't until 12/21/12....

Gnarly surgery lists ladies. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum I guess.

For some reason I'm fine with just being a girl on 'Moans. I'll think about GRS in like 10 years. I don't really care- I'd rather spend my money on a trad rack (not a ->-bleeped-<- rack. Oh! My climbing partners and I are making a shirt. A trad rack, incidentally, is climbing gear that you place in the wall on the way up. You carry this gear on your harness. It costs as much as fake boobs too! It's perfect).

My boobs will be however large they decide to be.

I guess I'm just really comfortable being trans. I'm hella butch anyway too, so I guess that's just good for me. I already look like a girl though, so that's pretty sweet. I wouldn't be surprised at all if I find out I have a non externally expressed intersex condition that effects my hormone uptake or something. We'll see. Endocrinology is fascinating!

I'll probably get laser, so like 2400 and touch ups, then whatever HRT costs.

I'm going to be honest here- my focus and happiness aren't really that centered on being a particular version of girl. I just am a lady, and that's all I need. Physical changes that might come with the hormones are great, but the mental changes are really what I'm interested in observing.

I'm going to spend thousands of dollars on a climbing gear before I spend a dime on surgery.

Gotta own it! I'm trans and I'm proud!

EDIT:

I too have seen girlies have FFS and look much less passable afterward. It's a shame. Love your inner goddess and she'll express herself physically in your smile and grace. Your eyes will express your feminine fire and your gaze will light the world with your love.

The light in me sees the light in you. The physical form is subject to change.

^This.

It is an adjustment for me, though.  In the beginning I had a more restricted image of what a woman was (and what kind of woman I wanted to be), but as I settle into it I find that I am just a woman somewhere in the range of normal women and am becoming fine with that.

Don't rush into all the changes.  Give yourself time to adjust to the kind of woman you are and can be.
