Meh, just a sampling...

The Messy:
Aliens: Big bad humans get their tail handed to them and survive only because they are trixy.
Conan the Destroyer -- truthfully I usually did not watch the whole thing, but I am quite fond of the first part.

The Funny:
Clue
The Pirates of Penzance (1983)
Monty Python (In Search Of The Holy Grail and Life Of Brian.)
A Funny Thing Happened To Me On My Way To The Forum (I think that is the title anyway)

The cartoons:
Star ->-bleeped-<-
Ghost in the Shell
Patlabor

Nice girly girly stuff huh?
*shrug* I have never claimed to be normal ;) (=

Hi All:

Saw this year The Queen and Deja Vu.  Deja Vu had some neat twists and turns.

But my all time favourite is Searching for Bobby Fisher.

Buffy

Last night, I went to see the Ilusionist.

The Film was fantastic, great acting, great story and a magical twist at the end.

If you get the chance go and see it.

Lady in the Water

Really?  I wanted to rent it yesterday, but I have heard so many bad reviews about it that I changed my mind.  When The village came out, everyone was just talking about it, they even did several interviews with M. Night Shyamalan.  He is strange! ;D

well, honestly, I was very disappointed when I saw the movie, for I did not think it deserved the kind of publicity it had gotten.

I just didn't want to experience the same thing with Lady in the water, but who knows, I'll possibly rent it next time just to see...

It has it's moments, but overall... I dunno. I expected something more.

What I DO like about his films is he shoots them within a few miles of here (Bucks County, PA)... or at least Signs was. It's creepy to see characters walking down streets you yourself have walked down. And spooky to watch a movie (Signs) that's all about omens, how there are no coincidences, everything happens for a reason even if those reasons aren't clear at first, how you just have to trust and believe... and of all the places, he "coincidentally" shoots it in your own back yard ;)

Hmmm...

That "living inside a mirrored ping-pong ball" thing again.

I was in the right mindset to watch it. Knowing it was a fairy tale, and thats all. You have to watch it knowing  it is a fairy tale, and not expect anything else based on any prior movie of his, or how they advertised it. To me it was a realistic fairy tale. Thats why I put it in the scifi/fantasy category. Do not try to turn it into a Sixth Sense or even a The Village.

Its a Fairy Tale, not a horror movie, or even a big mystery movie.

I judged American Haunting the same way for what it was, not for what they tried to advertise it as. It was a great story.

Brick and I watched "In My Country" last night.  The acting wasn't terrific.  But the story was fabulous.  It also is a good portrayal of the great reconciliation in South Africa.  Brick was so-so on it, but I did shed a tear or two.  Great film?  No.  But definitely a must see.

Hazumu

Last night (bronchitis and all,) I went to see The Dixie Chicks, Shut Up and Sing.

The movie lensed the hysteria and macho posturing post 9/11 through Natalie Maines' 12 word dissing of 'POTUS' in London on the eve of the Iraqi invasion, and the reactions they had to endure (banned from airplay, former 'fans' trashing their CDs, and a death threat with enough credibility behind it they had to institute extraordinary security measures to play a Dallas concert.)

Through it all they didn't back down.  They lost the 'Country AND Western' audience, but they're building a new audience from the aftermath.  And they're not looking back.

This is my Short Duration Most Favoritest movie, for now... ;)

Stormy Weather

Loved might be too strong a word, but hugely impressed might be more appropriate for:

The Fountain by Darren Aronofsky
(starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz)

Saw this last night and it's like a hybrid of 2001, Solaris, Altered States and... Love Story;)

If you like the metaphysical and serious science-fiction, and also romantic films then give this a try.

A meditation on love, death and eternity, it's not an easy watch from a narrative point of view as it's non-linear, cutting between three related strands of an intertwined story but it is an easy, seductive watch from a visual point of view. Scenes and images melt together in a gloriously languid way... one of the most beautiful-looking pictures I've seen for years.

With sensitive and raw yet restrained performances from the the two leads and gorgeously shot and edited. Haunting, poetic, intelligent, thought-provoking... something to sink your teeth into and be challenged by, many of the images and scenes will stay with you for days. One perhaps for repeated viewing; definitely not for fans of Police Academy.

Stormy Weather rates this a B+  ;D

Ricki, this is my personal opinion BTW, and of course there are people out there who loved the movie in question.  I personally hate movies about pirates, vampires, werewolves, superheroes......etc

Well "loved" might not be accurate.  But the most fun I had at a movie this year was seeing "Snakes On A Plane."  It was so incredibly stupid it was good, and funny.  Oops, not supposed to be funny...or was it?  I don't know but it was fun.

Love,

Kristi
