Eve of chaos

ok so this topic is about ym voice, I get feedback from my gf and my friend who say is sounds good but i cant hear it myself, and I had a really great idea to test it out.

I went out and purchased myself a copy of halo reach :p (never thought id do taht)

my thinking was simple, I know that people love to be obnoxious and criticize other people on halo, yet I also feel from past experiences of pretending to be female on online games that if they sense a female they will pounce on them, whether with sexist remarks are advances. i also expected taht if it was horrible id probably get made fun of for sounding gay. that is the popular put down these days.

so I figured if i fooled most people who just look to make fun of anyone then Im probably pretty golden. to me it seems brilliant haha

anyway I had tried it for a few days and got dismal when most people ignored me, it also took longer than i expected to find games with chatty people, halo inst as bad as i remembered/heard

but tonight I had my friend play with me, that way I could practice on him and eventually someone couldn't comment. and it seemed to work in a big way

for the most part, at first anyway no one made mention, so i figured either it was so bad that no one knew I was trying or it was good good and people nowadays just dont care if girls play video games (which they shouldn't haha, just wasn't helping ym test :p)

eventually my charisma picked up a few people who wanted to keep playing with me. it took awhile for anyone to mention anytihng gender. and when someone said something about liking penis i had to jump on my chance to announce my gender if no one was gonna blatantly say it i had to figure out why i didn't pass.

so this guy said something along the lines of "well you like penis" blagh blagh, and i responded, "why would that be an insult? and so he goes to ask me "wait are you gay" and at this point I was thinking horrible thoughts. you know depression blagh. but I eventually said something like "im a girl" and the other guy with us was like "o i bet you feel like an ass now" and he apologized and that was it, he accepted it,  so I asked him If I sounded like a boy, im sure any girl would ask that and be offended in some way. and he said "you dont sound manly I just thought you were a little kid and I cant ever tell if its a little boy or a girl"

whiiich I can understand, i myself have made that mistake, and i guess the first assumption in halo would be little kid and not girl, so i took that as a good thing.

but idk, there was another guy who after i said i was a girl said "I dont believe it, you have the manliest girls voice ive ever heard" and other stupid ->-bleeped-<- like "I bet your the man in the relationship" blagh. you know typical stuff, but it doesn't bother me, its part of the test.

what bothers me is that it sounds manly, there were some very angry mean girls as well who insisted I was jsut a "flaming homo" and at one point said "omg dont tell me it just aid its a girl"

really really really mean, but they were just looking for trouble with anyone and everyone, so for all i know they did believe it after i told them but wanted to keep up the insult, so i passed over that.

and the last guy straight out asked me before saying anything else if i was a girl or a little kid. and as soon as i said girl he went into a sexist rampage, funny mostly cause he made an ass of himself. and honestly if he thought I was female he could talk about the body parts I wished I had :p haha although offensive it made me feel good in an awkward way. like it always used to behind the keyboard.

o and i randomly got a message from someone saying we lived in the same state and he though "hey i should add her as a friend" and so since i didn't have to explain it to this person i instantly passed to at least someone.

so in the end its hard to say if it passes or not, maybe to some and not others, id like to say its a victory but what do you think?

*edit*
due to demand here is a small voice clip :p i didnt know what to say so i just read the first paragraph of the last unicorn haha

first is male voice then female voice

I think you should post a video or a recording of your voice...but then again 90% of the people on these forums tend not to be very straightforward with their responses anyway. But that is your best bet.

yeah just like with my friends and such i figure most people would be nice and tell me its better than it is, that's why i concocted this test in the first place, but I may record something sometimes and post it just to hear ideas on how it can improve.

AweSAM!

Please do so, we'd be very interested. I promise we won't bite. I can be candid without being brutal (if there is such a thing). I will tell the truth even if it hurts.

Eve of chaos

haha ok i uploaded my voice for all of you :p

AweSAM!

Wow, if that's your regular voice without any modification, then it's totally androgynous. I'm sure with the tiniest bit of effort, your voice can be great (unless you like your voice really androgynous). I had a bit of trouble deciding whether it sounds masculine or feminine.

Eve of chaos

haha thats my female voice :p my regular voice is definitely male I think

VeryGnawty

That clip sounds male to me.

That clip sounds male to me.

I figured as much, I cant seem to get it any better though ;.;

i reuploaded it and did my natural male voice first for a comparison

Rock_chick

That would confuse the heck out of me if i heard that over the phone...it doesn't sound female, but it's definitely not a grown mans voice. I think it lacks the tone and inflection that would seal the deal as female. good start though.

it might just be the reading on that too, i tend to go monotone when I read out loud :p

The monotone was the first giveaway.  I've met very few girls who talk like that.

I used to be really bad at reading out loud until I starting writing short stories.  Before that, I couldn't read a poem or a book for the life of me.  I always struggled with getting the cadence of the piece as it reads.

I seem to either go monotone or overdo it and sound like a total valley girl, im trying to find a balance.

Im hoping if i keep practicing on this vg ill get better since its a natural setting.

You don't want an upper inflection at the end of every sentence like you're always asking questions.

even if people don't go to female as the first assumption at least its good enough that they have no trouble believing its female once I announce my gender.

i feel that if i had a good look my voice wouldn't give me away, people may think tis strange but I'm willing to bet with the appearance they'd accept it as female.

Janet_Girl

the monotone is a dead give away to male.  Listen to any conversation and you will see that men tended to talk in a very flat monotone.  Women are more lyrical, with rises and falls.

Also try to smile when you talk.  Women seem to have a smile  in their voice.

haha i assure everyone that I'm not that monotone when im talking to people, its just really hard to read out loud and not be, and I think even bio girls do that if i remember correctly from high school, but idk, i can try to capture my natural voice sometime and see if thats any better

Eve of chaos

haha just to give you an idea of how abd the monotone is.

i was just playing it again to hear for myself and my gf looked up shocked and said "someone did the same exact thing as you!"

apparently i don't even sound like my normal self in my male voice :p

KillBelle

I think your female voice is androgynous enough where if you keep working at it, it will be very passable. I was surprised by the shift. i think you will be fine.
